Ghost user in Exchange distribution list
We are running Exchange 2007 sp1, a single Exchange server, clients on Outlook 2007. Active Directory 2003. About 150 mailboxes. We have a distribution list called "All Staff." it's in the GAL. We had a user on our network who retired a few years ago, call him John Wayne. Our HR director only started here a few months ago. Today, she sent an email (a calendar invitation, actually) to "All Staff" and Exchange sent her an undeliverable message for John Wayne: #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.ExRecipNotFound; not found ## When I go to the GAL on the Exchange server, or in "AD Users and Computers" his user name (and mailbox) do not show up, and he's also not in the GAL. If I go to the HR director's desk and compose an email, and put "All Staff" in the "To" box, and expand it, his name doesn't show up. I've been through the "All Staff" DL several times, and NONE of the names are distribution lists, so that's not the source of the problem. What's even odder is that from MY pc I send an email to "All Staff" and I do not get the undeliverable message. I would assume it's something stuck in the NK2 file, except that he was gone long before she got here, so she would never have had the opportunity to send him an email. And, of course, from her PC Autocomplete doesn't know about John Wayne. Then, I thought she had her own copy of the "All Staff" distribution list created as a personal DL, and John Wayne was in there. But her Outlook has no DLs in her Contact List at all (and, of course, his name isn't in her Contacts list.) Our Exchange system was upgraded about three years ago from Exchange 2003, and may have been upgraded from Exchange 5.5 (before I got here.) My last guess is that perhaps someone in Wayne's old department had set up a rule in their Outlook forwarding all their email (or calendar invitations) to Wayne's old email address. But if that was the case, I'd expect the 'undeliverable' message to kick back to that person, not to the originator. Any ideas? Suggestions? Places to look? tom

You know, those old cowboys don't die easy. Does this happen if she sends an EMAIL (not a meeting invitation) to the DL? You could have her: 1) Send to the DL via OWA 2) Send to the DL in Outlook but on another machine. (Just for testing of course) -> And no roaming Windows profile, right? What happens? Is she using Exchange cached mode? (You can turn it off and then back on)

Delegate. Delegate. Delegate. This is a delegate on one of the members of the group. Could be a stuck delegate which means it might not show in Outlook. However almost certainly it is a Delegate. When you remove a user, they are not removed as a delegate on any mailboxes they were on. Check the obvious candidates first - the boss, the minions. http://blog.sembee.co.uk/post/Account-Does-Not-Exist-Error-When-Appointment-Sent-to-Another-User.aspx SimonSimon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Sembee, you were ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! This person sometimes worked at the reception desk, and was at somepoint set up as a delegate to the generic "Front Desk" mailbox, and the "Front Desk" mailbox is a member of the "All Staff" distribution list. Another example, if you needed one, of the perils of generic user accounts.\ THANK YOU!! tom
