The most elegant way is to have your users add their own picture in SharePoint. Then have the SharePoint User Profile service export this picture to the Active Directory thumbnailPhoto attribute. Users are thereby able to chose and change their pictures. Next-to-no administrative effort for you as an administrator, except the initial configuration. The pictures will show up in Outlook 2007 / 2010 and the Lync client. That's how we do it. It does also work with linked mailboxes (separate forests with one-way external trusts). The basics are outlined here: Configuring Profile Image Export in SharePoint 2010 http://www.ableblue.com/blog/archive/2010/03/13/configuring-profile-image-export-in-sharepoint-2010.aspx If you have a certificate issue, take a look here: SharePoint Profile pictures syncing to the Active Directory http://beacon.wharton.upenn.edu/joecruz/2011/03/sharepoint-profile-pictures-syncing-to-the-active-directory/MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M

As an PS, here are the documents we used when implementing this functionality, all of which are excellent work: Read this one first: Planning and Deploying SharePoint Server 2010 User Profiles for My Site Web Sites http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=11332 Now you might also want to add those photos to the Offline Address Book. We did. These are about 200 users. But you might think twice if you have 20 000. Read either article for how to proceed or both: GAL Photos in Exchange 2010 and Outlook 2010 http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/03/10/3409495.aspx Adding photos to the Exchange 2010 Global Address List http://exchangeinbox.com/article.aspx?i=156&t=7&p=2 And for completeness -- while you don't have these clients: Enabling Outlook 2003 and 2007 to display Exchange GAL photos http://www.stevieg.org/2010/12/enabling-outlook-2003-and-2007-to-display-exchange-gal-photos Unfortunately, OWA cannot display GAL photos. Microsoft: Will this feature be implemented? Note: Make sure you have applied the latest rollups for SharePoint prior to SharePoint SP1 or even better SP1. We had problems with the synchronization with a plain vanilla install without rollups. This is also a well-known fact. MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M

How many Homer Simpsons are there in your AD? ;-) We've had some, er, questionable, pictures show up that were more suited to on-line dating services. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
