GAL - USER NOT THERE
Hi there, about an hour ago i created a new user in exchange 2010 but the user is not showing the GAL. The hide attribute is not selected. Does it take a while to appear in the GAL? Thanks

Hi How are you checking the GAL, is it through Outlook, possibly in cached mode? This uses the offline address book (OAB) which is only updated once a day by default. Have a look in using OWA and see if the user is there. Steve

Hi, Part- 1 : See Outlook will only download the OAB once every 24 hours, if the program is left constantly running. Normally it takes longer than that for Outlook to get the new changes shown in GAL. See the example below. Outlook 2007/2010 downloads the files from the OABvirtualDirectory and the files there are updated every 8 hours (=Pollinterval 480) So in other words, when you manually update the OAB and don't update the OABVirtualdirectory, there's nothing new for the client to download. To view the change you can view the OWA (Web mail) and see if the change has been updated or not ? Part 2:-if not then might be you will be having issue with OAB, if yes please post the errors from the eventvrw - application logs. How to To Update the OAB 1. Login to the Offline Address Book Generation Server, Mailbox server. Open the Exchange Management Console and click on Organization > Mailbox. Next click on the tab in the right pane that says Offline Address Book. 2. Right-click on Default Offline Address List and choose Update. Then click Yes. 3. After a period of 15 minutes, then login to each CASHUB server and restart the Microsoft Exchange File Distribution service. 4. On the Outlook client, choose the drop-down on Send/Receive to Download Address Book to test. Thanks

Another Hint, you can see the "live" address book by change from "Global Address List" to "All Users" under Address Book. This is how I verify if a new user is added to the system. Looks like by default, OAB doesn't cache the address-lists.

In addition, you can also try to update the global address list (GAL) manually. However, it may take several hours for the GAL to be updated.Noya Lau TechNet Community Support
