Forwarding to external email accounts...
why am I getting this message when sending an email from my external account to a user's internal account which has a forwarding address to an MSN account... Action: failedStatus: 5.5.0Diagnostic-Code: smtp;553 sorry, relay of mail is not allowed. (#5.7.1)

A typical cause of this error is when you are using a smart host relay and this relay uses a source domain verification meaning that it only allows you to send from @yourdomain.comFull time IT consultant since 1998 mainly on Exchange\ISA\AD MCSE NT4.0,2000/2003, CCNA MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 MCT since 2001

Hi, I think you could only set forwarding on domain objects, so if need to forward to an external email address then u will have to add a mail contact object with External email address as the msn account, and then set this contact as the forwarding address. Do you have "Allow automatic forwards" enabled for the org?

It is in Settings\Internet Message Format\Default\Advanced\Allow automatic forwards but you don't need to enable it since you created the contacted and forwarded the mailbox. did you read my first post ? are you using a smart host relay ? can you post a full NDR ? Found it. It's not enabled. But neither is another customer of mine and they have no problem forwarding emails. It's not a smart host relay.here's the full NDR...Reporting-MTA: dns;techartinc.comReceived-From-MTA: dns;fed1rmmtao107.cox.netArrival-Date: Mon, 8 Mar 2010 11:21:36 -0800 Final-Recipient: rfc822;bobdelrossi@msn.comAction: failedStatus: 5.5.0Diagnostic-Code: smtp;553 sorry, relay of mail is not allowed. this NDR was not generated by exchange what is ed1mmtao107.cox.net ? techartinc.com ?Full time IT consultant since 1998 mainly on Exchange\ISA\AD MCSE NT4.0,2000/2003, CCNA MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 MCT since 2001

Cox.net is my ISP and techartinc.com is my customer's domain where the Exchange Server resides. I sent a test email from my Cox account to a user within techartinc.com where he has a forwarding email address to his MSN account. Hope that makes sense.

Yea it makes sense but still, for me, this is not the recipient organization rejecting the message but rather MSN. Can you try forwarding the email to another domain say gmail.com? I have just tested with gmail.com and it reached me however it wait straight to spam. if this doesn't work check the tracking logs of exchange it should give us an ideaFull time IT consultant since 1998 mainly on Exchange\ISA\AD MCSE NT4.0,2000/2003, CCNA MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2007/2010 MCT since 2001

Actually, it was using a smart host and I just removed it and selected the option to use DNS and now all of the emails are sitting it the queues. Any ideas?

What is "it"? The SMTP virtual server or an SMTP connector? You want to use an SMTP connector in such cases.-- Ed Crowley MVP"There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems.".
