Forward messages (internally) for one user to another - with a small complication
Note: Exchange 2007 SP1 Forwarding messages can be done easily with a Transport Rule - "Sent to" for the condition (select person) and then "Redirect to" for the action (select person). But what if the person no longer works for the company and (better yet) their user account (and mailbox) was deleted? Let's say that it's only a month later that administration realizes that messages are still being sent to this user/address and asks for a solution (technical solution). The EMC will not allow you to create such as rule (since you cannot select the deleted user account). Is there a way do do this in the EMS? Or would it fail there too, because that person no longer has an account?

All EMC operations are actually carried out by the underlying shell extensions, so the same restrictions would apply. Is there a reason why you want to create such a rule that would forward to an address that no longer exists? Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

Hi, Do you mean that the user's mailbox was deleted from your domain. But people still sends the emails to his mailbox. So you want to redirect these emails to a other mailbox? To do this, you can use the following method: 1. Create a mail contact, set the SMTP address to the same one as the deleted user’s email address. 2. Create the transport rule. "Sent to" for the condition. select the contact that you created.

Jim: I want to forward from an address that no longer exists. Example: John Smith is no longer employed by us but a ton of people interacted with him in the past and many, not realizing he no longer works here, are still sending messages to jsmith@ourcompany.com (rather than the person who replaced him). You know, people that want to get back in touch after a more or less lenghty loss of contact and donate a million dollars - wouldn't want to miss that, would we? Thomas: Exactly. I'll have to try that but it looks like it would work - without us needing to recreate a MBX for the person.
