Folder sharing is not available - Error Message
In Outlook 2007 using MS Exchange Server, my customer "Joe" is trying to share his personal Contact folder with "Sue" his assistant. Sue has been given Owner permissions on Joe's Contact folder. We used the Contacts Properties, Permissions tab to set these permissions. I right-clicked on Contacts and selected the Share Contacts... option. This created a Sharing Invitation, Sharing invitation:Joe Doe- Contacts. I checked the box: Allow recipient to view your Contacts folder. So far, so good. Now I select Sue Roe sueroe@whatever.com as the recipient. But when I press Send, the following Error Message appears: Folder sharing is not available with the following entries because of permission settings on your network:sueroe@whatever.comTo share this folder, you must remove the above entries. Sue Roe is an Exchange and network user just like Joe Doe. She isn't on a different network. An Internet search and TechNet search for text from the Error Message produces no relevant hits. What setting needs to be changed so that Joe's Contact folder can be shared. This is a highly touted feature of Outlook 2007 and it is not working. Thanks in advance. Wells Anderson

Clarify: Joe got error when he wants to send Sharing Invitation for the contact folder in his mailbox to Sue, right? Troubleshooting: 1. Joe has set Owner permission to Sue with no error info from the Permissions tab of his contact folder properties, right? 2. Try to create a test user account, then see if you can reproduce behavior when send invitation from Joe to test user 3. Does Sues contact has been chosen from GAL in the To field of invitation? Can Sues SMTP address being resolved to display name in the To field? Possible Cause: 1. The Outlook cannot resolve the name properly 2. The AD permission was corrupted 3. The name cache of Outlook was corrupted; it'll be fixed by itself when Outlook name cache was updated 4. The GAL has some corruption; it'll be fixed by itself during the automatic update of GAL Collect info: 1. Both users are using exchange MAPI account, right? Not POP3 or IMAP4 2. Do two users belong to same domain? Please confirm 3. Please provide screenshot about the error message you encounter

You wrote: Troubleshooting: 1. Joe has set Owner permission to Sue with no error info from the Permissions tab of his contact folder properties, right? Yes 2. Try to create a test user account, then see if you can reproduce behavior when send invitation from Joe to test user Not sure how to do this. 3. Does Sues contact has been chosen from GAL in the To field of invitation? Can Sues SMTP address being resolved to display name in the To field? No! This was the problem! When I selected Sue from the Global Address List, the sharing e-mail was sent without error. Success! (I had selected Sue from the Personal Address List before.) Also, FYI, both users are using the Exchange MAPI account in the same domain. Thank you for providing this solution.I now have a related question. The Sharing E-mail had a check box to allow the recipient to View the sender's Contacts. I checked that. A confirmation dialog appeared after sending it, saying that Sue now has Read Only access to Joe's Contacts. That is good, but I want Sue to be able to add and change Contacts in Joe's address book. Can Joe share Contacts with Sue, allowing Sue to add and edit Joe's contacts? Many thanks. -- Wells

Clarify: So Joe can send invitation by using Sues contact from GAL but not his own contact folder, right? Can you try to remove Sues contact from contact folder and re-add from GAL? For second question, Joe just need change permission setting in his own contact folder will do: 1. Go to Joes contact folder 2. Right-click his contact folder and choose Change Sharing Permissions 3. Then select Sue to modify the permission 4. Go to Sues outlook, now she can add or edit Joes contact folder
