First exchange 2010 server in an existing exchange 2007 organization
i have an existing single server exchange 2007 organization in a single domain with roughly 75 users. the 2007 server is on a win2k3 standard server and is a domain controller. I am wanting to install an exchange 2010 server in the domain. exchange 2010 would be on it's own win2k8 r2 server and would be a member server. i would like to install the exchange 2010 server coexisting with the 2007 server and then slowly migrate the mail accounts to the 2010 server. will i need to run adprep or forest prep when first installing the 2010 server. will the two coexist good for the transition time. would i install the 2010 server with default or same roles as 2007 server(cas, hub and mail).

Hello, for 2010 you'll have to extend the schema and AD with /prepareschema, /preparead and /preparedomain but you can also go through the GUI installation which will do all the schema and AD extension stuff for you. Please take a backup of your AD so you can roll back in the event of a problem. If you want a single server without high availability you can go by installing MBX, HUB and CAS roles on the single server. Greetings, Toni

If you are on a single server, single domain in the forest deployment, then you don't have to prep the domain beforehand. The setup.exe GUI will do everything for you. Manual prep is only required when multiple domains in the forest are concerned. Do be aware that Exchange will have a dependency on that domain controller. When Exchange is installed on a domain controller it and all other Exchange servers will only use that domain controller. Therefore if you plan to remove it and have other domain controllers you will have to remove Exchange 2007 before you can do anything else with it - including taking away the global catalog role.
