First Storage Group - Exchange 2007 Std

I would just double check that you don't need any mailboxes on that storage group. Typically, Exchange won't let you delete it if it thinks there's data on it.

Good advice, I'm sure there are no mailboxes on it :) I've ran the Database / Equals query and it shows nothing in the DB. Also I've had it dismounted for 3 days with no complaints.
Is step 2 needed ? - Suspend the First Storage Group

If you were able to confirm no data on it, then you should be good to go. I would do an NT backup on it just in case you need to restore. By the way, you don't have public folder on it...do you? Do you have Outlook 2003 connected to your network?

That should be OK, as that's not the SG you're getting rid of.Sukh

Run Get-MailboxStatistics -Database <DatabaseIdParameter> to verify if there are any mailboxes, that tends to be more accurate in enumerating any hidden mailboxes compared to looking at the gui or even get-mailbox. But again if there are hidden mailboxes
it will prevent deletion of as previous posters have mentioned.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Outlook 2003 and older clients used the public folder DB to mount mailboxes.

Hi
Your process is ok.
Please remove hide folder before you remove SG.

First Storage Group
One of my exchange 2007 server has a disused first storage group that's simply taking up disk space on the server. There are no other database stores on this server and the database is dismounted.
Is safe to delete this first storage group? I've been told that if I delete the catalogdata and the mailbox database.edb then remount the data store , exchange will rebuild a new empty mailbox database.edb? I simply want to reclaim the space

Hi
You should remove the database and then remove the storage group using either the EMS or EMC.
Database:

Storage Group:

Thnak Steve ,
I found this on the froum
0. i've moved all mailbox to the new storage group and database.
1. Dismount daabase in the First Storage Group.
2. Sunpend the First Storage Group.
3. For security reasons i've keep this situation for 2 days and reviewing the evento log and i dont see anything... all is ok

4. I've removed the database in the fisrt storage group and next remove the suspended first storage group

5. Romove the file in the partition and all is ok until now.
