First Exchange 2010 server in 2003 / 2007 environment
Currently we have several Exchange 2003 / 2007 servers, mail relays to and from Internet are being handled by two 2003 servers. We liked to do 2007 Edge Transport, but didn't do it knowing 2010 was coming out soon. Our oldest Exchange 2003 server is too old and needs to retire. I am planning to bring in two new Exchange 2010 servers, which one of them will be Edge Transport, and the other one is hub transport / client access server to move users on the 2003 server to. My question here, which one should I setup first? -- If I setup my first Exchange 2010 as HT / Client access server, will the 2003 SMTP server have any problem relaying mails to this 2010 server? -- If I setup my first Exchange 2010 as ET server, will it work with all of my exsiting 2003 / 2007 servers, while there is no 2010 HT in the enrivonment?

Hi First thing is, there is a good site which can provide to a "to do" list/checklist of things that are required http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/exdeploy2010/default%28EXCHG.140%29.aspx Also check this link it should give you all information about the upgrade process http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998186.aspx Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog

Hello I would recommend you to install CAS HUB and MBX role and then you can install edge transport after that you can Move Internet mail flow from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010,Move mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010,Move Public Folders You can use this link http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee332309.aspx Thanks MhussainThanks Mhussain

Thanks to both Jonas and Mhussain, I have additional question here. Yesterday I was trying to figure things out while doing it, and I have installed all roles under the typical setting at once. Later on I read on the instructions that I should: Install Client Access role - Do certain things (A) Install Hub Transport Role - Do certain things (B) Install Mailbox Role - Do certain things (C) Now the brand new Exchange 2010 server I have already has three roles installed, does it matter that I just do (A), (B), and (C) in order? Or I have to remove HT and MBX roles before proceeding with (A), then do everything in the right order?

Basically CAS should be installed first every time, but since you installed all roles together this shouldn't be an issue I'll post a guide you can check, i hope it will help you http://msexchangegeek.com/2010/01/30/rapid-transition-guide-from-exchange-2003-to-exchange-2010/Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog

Thansk Jonas, It does help a lot. And I am so sorry, I hope this is the last question I have about this subject. I have been given many resources here, but I noticed all of them are written for 2003 to 2010. But I also have E2007 running. Is there any particular thing I should do on my Exchange 2007 servers?

Hmm... It's most the same, from 2007 -> 2010 you don't need to update addresslists etc, they are already OPATH formated Check dependencies, mail flow, public folders, firewall rules, publishing if you are using ISA/TMG Usually the key is to plan it well :) and do a really good investigationJonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | MCSE/MCSA Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog
