Federation Between an Exchange 2010 and Mix Exchange 2007/2010 Organization
Hi We wish to setup Federation (Free/Busy info for Exchange and Lync 2010 users) between a pure Exchange 2010 organization and a mix Exchange 2010/2007 organization. Need clarity on the following two points: 1. Is GalSync a necessity for when we have one pure Exchange 2010 forest and another forest with a mix of Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010? Following articles states this: a. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh310374.aspx b. http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/06/28/cross-org-availability-using-federation-trust-and-organization-relationship.aspx 2. How many TXT Records do I need to federate single SMTP domain - only one (for Primary SMTP domain) or two (for Primary SMTP domain and another as Exchangedelegation.SMTPDomain.com). Referring to the articles, it says we need two: a. http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2011/06/28/cross-org-availability-using-federation-trust-and-organization-relationship.aspx b. http://www.expta.com/2011/07/how-to-configure-exchange-2010-sp1.html But MS Technet (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff601760.aspx) says it only requires one (it does not talks about ExchangeDelegation.SMTPDomain.com). Please help clarifying these points. Regards Taranjeet Singhzamn

Hi Zamn, 1, Yes. 2, In Exchange 2010 SP2, you no longer need to create an "exchangedelegation.domain.com" subdomain specifically for the trust. Exchange will prepend a well known value (fydibohf25spdlt) to the Account Namespace. This subdomain doesnt have to be an accepted domain in your Exchange organization and doesnt require a domain name system (DNS) proof of ownership TXT record. Hi zamn, I'm afraid you have to setup the GALsync. As the Exchange team blog said: For Exchange 2007 to query availability cross org, directory synchronization must be performed for all users for which Free/Busy needs to be shared. This can be performed either manually (create Exchange contacts or Mail-enabled users one at a time), or via an automated process (MIIS, ILM, FIM, other 3rd party dirsync tool, etc.). Dirsync is required in this case because Exchange 2007 requires (and expects) a local object when the availability request is performed. If no local Exchange object is present, the availability request will fail.Frank Wang TechNet Community Support
