Failure in moving mailbox from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007
I've got one stubborn mailbox that I can't seem to get moved from our Exchange 2003 server to our Exchange 2007. The mailbox is a bit over 3 GB in size and the last time I attempted to move it I got this error:Error:Error was found for Name, Name, User (User.Name@mydomain.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Preparing mailbox to be moved. Failed to copy basic mailbox information with error: After moving a mailbox, you must wait for cleanup operations to complete before you can move it again., error code: -1056749241I first tried this 24 hours ago and then again this morning, both times with the same effect. After this last attempt, I opened the Exchange 2003 console and ran a Purge on the Mailboxes hoping that might have an effect. I'm wondering if I need to let it sit for 48 hours instead or maybe there's some way to reset the mailbox?Orange County District Attorney

Hi again Sandy,Did you run ExBPA to scan your Exchange 2007 server implementation recently? I suggest you to update and run it regularly to keep Exchange environment healthy.About your issue, it seems that this might be an permission issue on your Exchange server where inheritance is blocked and it should be picked up by ExBPA. IfExBPA shows something similar, follow below article.Move Mailbox - Access control list (ACL) inheritance is blocked for the Exchange server objecthttp://davidsandor.com/blogs/tipsandtricks/archive/2008/03/27/move-mailbox-access-control-list-acl-inheritance-is-blocked-for-the-exchange-server-object.aspxAmit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Thanks for the tip Amit. We do run the BPA fairly often. I ran it and it checked out ok except for telling us a few storage drivers were old (we knew that) but otherwise Permissions checked out.Orange County District Attorney

Sounds good...Can you explain more about the move mailbox problem? Did mailbox move to Exchange 2007 server or it got failed with above error and current mailbox location still points to Exchange 2003 mailbox database? If it still points to 2003 database, are you able to see disconnected mailbox in EMC of 2007? You may run Clean-MailboxDatabase on the database where you attempted to move the mailbox which marks the stale mailbox as a disconnected and it supposed to purge by daily online maintenance scheduled to run every night.Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Well, we had success this morning! This one, last, mailbox was finally moved from Exch 2003 to Exch 2007 without any errors. Yesterday, I ran a Purge in the Exch 2003 console for good measure (not sure it really had any effect, but it made me feel good). Perhaps the Purge did something, I'm not sure. After each failed attempt, the mailbox still showed on the Exch 2003 server. I never did see the mailbox on the Exch 2007 server. Perhaps the daily maintenance cleaned the stale mailbox last night which made it successfull?Orange County District Attorney

Sounds good..!! Yes, it should be daily onlinemaintenance which would have marked the stale mailbox as a disconnected and purged it on Exchange 2007 database during night.BTW in Exchange 2003 you right click on the database and click on "Run Cleanup Agent" to clean up the database immediately, Clean-MailboxDatabase cmdlet does the similar thing in Exchange 2007.Sometimes when you delete the mailbox, it doesn't show in Disconnected Mailbox immediately and you can run that cmdlet to do forceful cleanup. Check below article to get more detail...Cant see Deleted Mailbox in Disconnected Mailbox under Recipient Configurationhttp://exchangeshare.wordpress.com/2008/04/27/cant-see-deleted-mailbox-in-disconnected-mailbox-under-recipient-configuration/Amit Tank | MVP - Exchange | MCITP:EMA MCSA:M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Thanks for the tip on Exch 2003, we hadn't thought about that. I like being able to do a forceful cleanup. One other question, along these same lines. We've noticed now that we've moved all our mailboxes to our new Exch 2007 server, when we look at the Mailboxes in the Exchange System Manager on the Exch 2003 server, they all have red circular x's on them. It's like they need to be purged. The thing is, they don't seem to want to purge out. If I select one of the mailboxes and right-click to Purge, it asks me to confirm the deletion and then give me an error:"The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox was already reconnected to an existing user. ID no: c1034ad6 Exchange System Manager"Should we just leave these be or is there a way to clean them out of the Exchange 2003 System manager?Orange County District Attorney
