Fail on setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions
Dear All,according to microsoft, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996719.aspx"For the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of Exchange2007, in each domain (including child domains) where you have the Exchange Enterprise Servers and Exchange Domain Servers groups and therefore must run Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions, you must have at least one domain controller that is running WindowsServer2003 SP1 or a later version."In our child domain, we still have some are window 2000 domain. But we are run the setup /pl on root domain (no exchange server), it fails, and said the resaon is some of domain dont have windows 2003 dc.Is it true that, we cannot deploy 2007 until all domain have at least 1 dc in running windows 2003?Thanks a lot.

Hi, Yes that is true. That was the criteria till Exchange 2007 RTM, but it changed in Exchange 2007 SP1. In SP1, you required at least one Windows 2003 SP1 DC/GC in the domain where you are running setup and you can install Windows 2003 SP1 DC/GC in other domain before you install Exchange 2007 in that domain. Here is an update from Exchange Team... A setup prerequisite change in Exchange 2007 SP1 I hope this helps...

Hello, You can ignore below two warnings if you are sure about Windows 2003 SP1 in a domain where you are installing Exchange 2007 SP1. Cannot find the Recipient Update Service responsible for domain 'DC=XXX,DC=com'. New and existing users may not be properly Exchange-enabled Cannot find at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later in domain 'DC=japan,DC=XXX,DC=com'. I think main error is One or more servers in the existing organization is running Exchange Server2003 without Service Pack 2 (or later). Installation cannot proceed until existing Exchange Server 2003 computers are upgraded to Service Pack 2 All Exchange 2003 must be running with SP2 and Exchange 2000 with SP3 minimum to install Exchange 2007. Below checklist would be helpful. Planning Checklist You may also run ExBPA with Exchange 2007 Readiness Check before installation and check if any errors are there.

Dear Amit, After upgrade all Exchange 2003 SP2 and still fail after run "setup /pl" have same error Cannot find at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Serv ice Pack 1 or later in domain 'DC=XXXX,DC=Company,DC=com'. This could be the resu lt of moving domain controller objects in Active Directory. Check that at least one domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later is loc ated in the 'Domain Controllers' organizational unit (OU) and rerun setup. Active Directory root domain 'DC=company,DC=com' is in mixed mode. To install Exchange Server 2007, this domain must be Windows 2000 native mode or above. The Exchange Server Setup operation did not complete. For more information, visi t http://support.microsoft.com and enter the Error ID. Exchange Server setup encountered an error. In the company.com , we dont have any exchange server in here, According to Microsoft http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb288907(EXCHG.80).aspx The Following commands to be completed before installing the first Exchange 2007 server. 1. Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions 2. Setup /PrepareSchema 3. setup /PrepareAD 4. Setup /PrepareDomain I am thinking can i skip run Setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions , it seems only require on exchange 2007 RTM not SP1 Any ideas. Thanks

Make sure that you have at least one DC running on Windows 2003 SP1 or later in HongKong domain where you are installing Exchange 2007 & xxx.com is fine with Windows 2000 DCs. You need to raise the domain functional level from 2000 mixed to 2000 native to install Exchange 2007, here is the Planning Checklist & a guide to Raise the domain functional level.

Not to add more confusion to this,as I'm also getting same message that the DC must be at least W2K3 SP1 but I just wanted to know if anyone knows if having a Windows Server 2008 as the DC instead is suppose to meet the requirements. I've setup a Windows 2000 Forest with 2K DC's and Exchange 2000 and trying to introduce Exchange 2007. I've updated the Schema (Inetorgperson kit), installed and added a2008Server as a Domain Controllerand made it the Operations Master but still says the original W2K Domain Controller which was the Operations Mastermust be W2K3 SP1. Have I miss something somewhere?

Sry for bringing up this rather old thread but I've had the same issue. I removed all win2003 DC's and replaced them with win2008R2 DC's.(half year ago) Then I tried to migrate from exch2003 -> 2007 but I encountered the same error as the person above. Now I installed a win 2003 DC and I have passed these steps. But I wonder, when everything is migrated from exch2003->2007 and I uninstalled the exch2003 from our domain, can I remove the WIN2003 DC and proceed with our new 2008R2 DC's? Exch2007 will be installed on a WIN2008 SP2 64BIT. regards, murda

going from Exchange 2003 to 2010 in our lab (thank god) and did not run setup /PrepareLegacyExchangePermissions prior to the installation because we're not installing the RTM version like the Technet article states above, and the setup completed successfully, however we can not launch the Exchange Management Console successfuly, we get this error: Initialization failed The following error occurred when searching for On-Premises Exchange server: [oldserverName.something.something] Processing data from remote server failed with the following error message: The user "MyDomain\Adminusername" isn't assigned to any management roles. For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic. It was running the command 'Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SppressError $true'. The Event Log also has this error: (Process w3wp.exe, PID 1936) "RBAC authorization returns Access Denied for user . Reason: No role assignments associated with the specified user were found on Domain Controller __________"
