Lenovo W520 i7 w*GB of RAM and 128GB SSD

Visio 2010 32bit w/SP1

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit w/SP1 instance.  

Problem:

From the first time I ran Visio I have been experiencing such bad performance that it is virtually unusable.   A simple file save can take over a minute while the app goes grey and says "Not Responding", accessing stencils has a 10 second delay, and a simple action like moving he endpoint of a connector will take up to a minute or more with the same grey frame and "not responding".

I have asked others in my company if they have the same problem and they don't seem to be experiencing it.  I have a very vanilla install, not many apps and certainly very little  to no freeware.  About hte only thing I can think of that is different is that I have Adobe Acrobat Pro installed and none of  them do.

Can you check in File > Options > Add-ins and see if there are any odd add-ins running? The folks at MS tell us that a BlueTooth add-in often gets installed and causes problems, and it might be that Acrobat has also added something.

Acrobat has installed 7 Addins and three is no way to remove or disable them in the stanmdard dialogues:

ChangeConversionSettings

ConvertAllPages

ConvertToPDF

ConvertToPDFandEmail

ConvertToPDFandSendForReview

ConvertToPDFExt

PDFMAddonLoader

I am going to uninstall Adobe and see if that fixes it.  But I can't be the only person with Adbobe Acrobat and Visio installed.

Maybe the order they are installed?

After removing Adobe Acrobat Pro I am still experiencing the same behavior.

The only AddIns left are:

Event Monitor

Persist Events

Print ShapeSheet

From your description, you can try to set the Microsoft XPS as default printer to avoid an issue of printer.

Then try to disable the offline files index feature refer to the following steps:

1.Click Start, type index in Search, then Enter

2.Click the Modify button.

3.Uncheck the Offline Files checkbox, click OK.

Nope - no luck.   After making those changes (without rebooting) it took Visio about 60-90seconds to open a file (while going grey) no one else has issues with and moving a connector was exactly the same.

About the only thing I can think of that is different is that I am using SnagIt and others aren't, but there are no plugins for that app.

I did 2 things - 

Upgrade to 64bit Visio.

Followed your instructions, disabling all non-MS services.

Switching to 64bit Visio has largely resolved the File Open/Close/Save latency issue.

However, the extreme latency when modifying objects has not changed.   I timed a few things:

• Re-position connector:  14-15 seconds - The connector "ghost" moves quickly  but once you release on the new connection point it takes 14-15s and the Visio Application frame goes grey "Not Responding"
• Resize simple rectangle: 10-12s - In this case the "ghost" that shows you the new location of borders doesn't show up for 5-6s, and once you release, it takes 5-6s to resize with same behavior as above.

I am going to have to escalate this and open a support case, it has become intolerable and is affecting my ability to get my work done.  I have several large documents due in the near future and this behavior is making it very hard to meet my deadlines.

Maybe a long-shot ... is auto-save enabled?

File -> Options -> Save

and make sure the time isn't set to something silly, like 1 minute.

That is a long shot :)  Already checked and eliminated as a cause.

Other colleagues with the same laptop/OS are not having issues.

It alll be long shots from here!

Is the computer on a network? If so then try disconnecting from the network (boot with no network).

Try a new user account (try limited priveledges and an admin account)

Have you tried reinstalling/repairing Visio?

I have tried all of these - I am a mobile worker so frequently work offline - I am on my second laptop with a clean Win7 64bit install - same problem as my previous laptop.

It has to be something I have installed that is different than other people.   The 3 primary culprits I can think of:

X1

Snagit  (wants to change the default printer to itself all of the time)

Adobe Acrobat

I have removed Acrobat - no difference

Killed all Snagit processes - no difference

Also tried restarting with only Windows processes - no difference.

Can you install some VM software and install Visio in that?

I think it's far more likely to be a SnagIt problem, to be fair. I'll try it next week.

I've just installed and tested SnagIt, it had no effect on Visio.

I am back to the same thing - it just totally hung - hard, simply adding a UCS chassis to a very simple diagram.  

PCs are cheap, junk it and get a new one. If it's starting to adversely affect your productivity etc then it's a no-brainer.

Junk my PC?   It isn't reporting any HW issues and it is by any stretch of the imagination, a "Power System".  

I can't believe I am the only person experiencing this problem.

I know this is an old thread, but I am having the exact same issue. After scouring Google and TechNet, this is the only lead I've found... with apparently no answer.

Surface Pro 3 with i7 and 8GB RAM, running Visio Pro 2010 32 bit. Running Windows 10 build 10162. There aren't any add ins running in Visio.

CPU will jump to 90-100% randomly with no rhyme or reason. Doesn't cooperate with i7?
