Exchnage 2007 - Outlook client 2003 - slow response
I am having an issue with my Outlook 2003 clientes taking several minutes to open. I cant seem to identfy the source of the problem:- The response time issame with CacheMode enabledand disabled. - The icon for "updating folders" in the lower right never goes away. - Archiving is not configured.- no revealing events are noted in Event Viewer- However once Outlook is fully opened and then closed and then reopened again the Outlook client will open in a flash and respond normailly.- Webmail response is fast.- OS is XP pro multilanguage- I dont know if it is realate but getting into production mode after log on also takes about the same time 3 minutes or so. (but I think this has more to do with spec of the LTs and DTs than the network)- I have not as of yet installed SP 3I have tested the network responses and lantency and all other application and internet access responses are normal. My DNS configuration is clean.I have a Primary and Secondy DNS serer, the exchange server does not have the dns server role installed.I have three mail stores on the Exchange server, but I dont think thisis the cause of my issue.TheExchange server in on a new 64 bit box with plenty of ram and hd space. When logged onto the exchange serverresponse is quick.Any suggestions on how to tackle this issue would be greatly appreciated.Thank you

OK. How about exbpa , exmon and expta results. Is this happening on all your VLANs and subnets or some of them.I will suggest to run netmon from client side and exchange server at the same time. Need to check where is this RPC traffic getting blocked. Is the store.exe is reciving the request late or is delaying in the response time. How about the other stores? Are they fine?Any thing unusual in perfmon?Raj

Raj:Thank you for your reply. Sorry that it took me so long to reply. When I searched for answers to your questions, it took me a while to get my head around on how to view/interpret the data. Im still pretty sure I have a lot to learn. Ok, here are the result from the various utilities and some additional background. More backgroundProblem is occurring for all users (aprox 50)Flat network (only one subnet)Exchange Serve 2007 on 64bit machineSystem partition on 2x146GB Raid 1 C:\ DriveMail store on 6x146GB RAID 5 D:\Drive- 5 Mail Stores - Executives - Large Mail boxes - Team members - Mailbox Database - Public folder DatabaseThe entire D:\ drive (all mail stores) is excluded from the local AV scanner The results on Performance Monitor (this was performed with only one know user logged onto network accessing Exchange) I used the counters listed ion the recommendation produced by Troubleshooter pointing to microsoft article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa995886(EXCHG.80).aspx - RPC Operation/sec - Active User Count - Active Client Logons (MSExchange IS Public) - Active Client Logons (MSExchange IS Mail Box) Results for Active User Count- Public Folder = 8- Mail Stores - Executive = 43 - Large Mail boxes = 26 - Team Members = 29 - First Storage group = 31 - MSExchagneIS = 36the RPC operations/sec fluctuatethe RPC aferage latency is 2.0 Netmon from Exchange (this was performed with only one known user logged onto network accessing Exchange)Not sure how to interpret the results. However form the client side, I kept getting the follwing message MSRPC: c/0 Request: Unknown message. I used the following article to troubleshoot the error http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314825/en-usAfterwards Netmon showed MSRPC: c/0 Request: Exchange Server STORE EMSMDB Exhange Monitor show some data but im not sure how to interpret the data. Packets, Operation, CPU Time and CPU % and Average/Max Serverlatnecy seems low.Sample user: Packets = 9 , Operation=22, CPU Time = 15, CPU %=50%, Aver ServrLatnecy=5 Max Server Latency= 71. In Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant I get the following errors:- Disk Bottle Neck Found- Fatal error reading performance data. Error accessing the 'MExchagneDSAccess Domain Controllers' performance counter.- Unusually high user activity detected. Seems there is a lot going on, Not sure how to proceed, this is kind of new territory for me.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.Allen; Thank you for your reply as well. I will take a look at the link you sent and try what seem relevant to my setup.Thank you.

Disk bottle neck is not some thing we expect on exchange servers. Now see this http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2005/09/28/411674.aspxThere are solutions for Performance related issues.Raj

Hi,Still working on it. Have cleard some of the errors found in Trouble shooting Assistant. However Outlook continues to open slowly.I followed some of the suggestions in the technet article you provided a link for (thanks) and cleaned up some old accounts and public folders and distribution groups. However again not real noticable improvement with Outlook opening for the frist time.I have been working with Microsoft to trouble shoot the Issue. They, so far, have not been able to identfy the issue. eitherWill give an update later. Thanks,
