Exchange server memory use problem.
Hello,
I am using Exchange 2007 in a two physical server configuration with the edge
server in one physical server and hub + transport + CAS servers in another
physical server.
The server running the Exchange hub + transport + CAS servers has 8 GB of RAM
and two quad-core CPUs. I have about 100 users and the total size of the
storage group is about 60 GB. Usually memory use in the machine is
approximately 6 ~ 7 GB (as shown in the Task Manager performance tab). Couple
of days ago the server became unresponsive (I couldn't even restart the
information store process using the service manager) and had to be rebooted. It
seems to be working fine now except that the memory use is now around 9 ~ 10 GB
at all times.
In trying to figure out why the server crashed, I've been going through the
event logs and the earliest error I see is this:
===================================================
Event Type: Error

So far I haven't been able to find the cause of this crash. Or why the memory use is higher after I rebooted the machine. I would greatly
appreciate any help and advice on resolving this problem and preventing it from
occurring again. Thank you.

Chamara,I also experience the same problem as you, my specs are:Win 2k3 x64 Std.2x Quad Core @ 2.53 GHz16 GB RAM4x 500 GB SAS - RAID 5with Typical single server deployment of HT-CAS-MBX for serving 60 users mailbox. I also run FF Security for Exchange Server with 5x AV scan engine to scan realtime.and in one day i notice that in one day the STORE.exe reaching 11 GB !i guess it's normal when the Exchange server is doing some Mailbox indexing and probably Antivirus scanning. /* Support Engineer */

Albert, thanks for your reply. My server specs are similar to yours, except that I only have 8 GB of RAM and I have 4 X 500 GB drives in RAID 10 configuration. The server crash occurred at around 3:00 AM. As far as I know, Exchange does its daily maintenance tasks from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM. I am not too worried about the memory use, but I am worried about the server crashing again. And I just want to find out the cause of the error so that I can make sure it doesn't happen again.

Hi,Regarding the relationship between memory and performance, below link is a good artile can help you understand this concept:http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/01/16/432222.aspxFrom the error message, it seems that the memory is use up which lead to the Exchange server to be restarted.
So, it is recommended to apply the recommended hotfixes to ensure these known memory issues no longer contribute to excessive memory usage :

And/or added at least 2 more gigs of memory to accommodate for mailbox memory requirements and growth.Hope that helps.ThanksAllen
