Exchange rejects correct Outlook 2007 password
Hi All I have a client running Exchange 2007. All Outlook 2003 clientcan connect. They have one PC running Outlook 2007. This was able to connect previousley, but this moring outlook hung and after the user restarted his machine he was asked for a password. He entered the correct password but it was rejected. He can log on to OWA and via a PC running Outlook 2003. I have tried the following: 1. Restarted PC and Server 2. Changed users password 3. Tried putting in the username as both DOMAIN\user and just username 4. Tried creating a new Outlook Profile - I was able to create the profile but the first time I opened outlook with that profile it asked for the password, which was rejected 5. Did a repair on Office 2007 6. Ran BPA - some issues found, but all driver related or otherwise inconsequential 7. Checked Client and Server event logs - nothing of note found Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance David

The password prompt may not be coming from Exchange. If your autodiscover isn't configured correctly then it could be an external host that is generating the prompt. Autodiscover is NOT an optional feature - it may well have been broken for some time, but because you are using Outlook 2003 you aren't using it. Password prompts can also be generated because the SSL certificate on the server isn't correct. Outlook isn't always able to deal with SSL prompts that are generated because a self signed or expired SSL certificate is in use. All of the above issues are well known, and searching through the forum and/or Google should show results. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

Can you try connecting to the same user using OWA. If you can connect with OWA, then it could be a MAPI related issue - Outlook 2007 corrupt or Autodiscover. You might need to redo settings using the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb232838%28v=exchg.80%29.aspx.

Sembee: Thanks for the suggestions - however as I said, this was working but stopped suddenly after the machine running Outllook 2007 hung. This lead me to think that it is not an Autodiscover related issue, which I have since confirmed by setting up Office 2007 on a different machine and using it with the same user ID. This seems to rule out any server or mailbox specific issue. I'll give some further consideration to the possibility that it is a certificate issue (it is self signed), but as I said it was working before and the cert has not expired or been changed in any way.

Jose: As I said in my original question, the user can log on to OWA and via Outlook 2003. As I have done a repair of MS Office I don't think that it is a corruption problem (also as I said I cant create a new profile, so not a corrupt profile), however i will try uninstalling and reinstalling Office. Failing that I will rebuild the PC.

Hi David, I would say lets still not disregard this to be a client(Outlook) issue. I have seen many time that repairing or uninstalling Office not resolving Outlook specific issue. I would recommend you to try the following steps and confirm: i) Deleting "Protected Storage System Provider" subkey - Follow Method3 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684 ii)Fixing USER SHELL FOLDER CORRUPTION This can also happen due to corruption in the User Shell Folder which might be prompting to an incorrect path. Try using the FIX IT from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549 or try manually updating as per the article. DO make sure you restart after this step.
