Exchange limits and capabilities: newbie question
Hello, Group of sales people use mailserver to store customer communication. Each person has its own mailbox and there are also several shared folders. They also has home-made CRM/ERP system and want to link emails to the customers stored in this system. My questions: 1) If they use outlook and exchange protocol: what is the maximum mailbox size they can use with out of performance troubles? If they have 300 000 letters in inbox and 2 000 000 in shared folder -- would it be ok? What if they use web interface? How fast server-side search would be? Would not client download ALL emails from server and die with OOM? 2) Can developers create special rules to sort emails using some programming language (.net based)? For example "copy email to "big customers" if customer has > 100 orders in our CRM" (CRM has API to find orders by email) ? 3) Can developers create forms using .net (or vba) to make interface more sales-friendly? (i.e. sales person clicks on email and browser opens specific page in CRM web interface)? AFAIK Microsoft configured outlook to work with their CMS, I wonder if group of developers who can use .net could do it for their own CRM? 4) What protocols do exchange support to access it from third party tools (SOAP? IMAP? HTTP?) Thanks.

Hi,Kazakevichilya, 1)There are no inherent size limits on individual mailboxes. The main factors that limit mailbox size, practically speaking, are available disk space, backup and restore times, Service Level Agreements, and Outlook performance. First, it's not the size of the mailbox that impacts performance - it is the number of items in the folder or folders that are being accessed on the server. In particular, performance is largely influenced by the number of items in the most commonly used folders: Calendar, Contacts, Inbox, and Sent Item folder. So I think in your case it would be a pain for user to load a huge letters. Here is a blog post taking about the mailbox size and another old thread for your reference http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2005/03/14/395229.aspx http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchange2010/thread/375827fc-10f0-4c8d-9327-bc0537eb339d/ 2) & 3) I am not familar with developping and CRM so I cannot answer these two questions for you. However I suggest you post the question on Exchange Server 2013 - Development forum or MSDN forum for developers http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserver 4) Regarding the protocol Exchange server supported you can check the Microsoft Exchange Server Protocol Documentation And some other resource for your reference. http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2007/07/10/3403386.aspx http://www.howtogeek.com/99423/email-whats-the-difference-in-pop3-imap-and-exchange/ Note: Microsoft is providing this information as a convenience to you.
