Exchange database growing rapidly.
Hi I will explain my exchange server setup. It is Exchange Server 2007 withh CCR setup. One hub and cas server, 2 mailbox servers. My problem is the echange databse server file is growing too fast. It was 246 GB and now it reaches 271 GB with in a span of 5 days. it was stable with 246 GB for along period. User's are not archiving their mailboxes as it is done by Syamntec Enterprise Vault. I check the EV server everythign is working fine. But why this exchange database growing such a fast pace is really a problem for me. Is there any way to find what problem or which user creating the problem. How I can know the see the usage of different users on exchange for a given moment of time. Expecting a early reply from you ..

I am posting a link to a fairly comprehensive troubleshooting guide on Database and log growth. The first step is to acquire the Exchange User Monitor (ExMon) to find out which users are spending the most time in the system and go from there. This will usually give you the best starting point. http://blogs.technet.com/b/mikelag/archive/2009/07/12/troubleshooting-store-log-database-growth-issues.aspx

Russ Where I need to apply Exmon. Is it on Hub/cas or Mailbox servers. My Exchange is 2007 with version 8.1 .

You actually install it on mailbox server you wish to monitor.

Russ is on point and there are several things you can check when it comes to rogue log generation, it can happen for many reasons i.e. 1. Data importation (doesn't sounds likely based upon your explanation) 2. Mailbox Moves and in some cases stuck/looping pending moves 3. Automated mailings, i.e. if you have someone sending out large mail blast 4. Spam 5. 3rd party integration, i.e. if you are using a CRM system with an outlook plugin it can cause issues. I know there was an issue with MS CRM Dynamics that caused this in the past 6. Devices gone wild like iPhones etc http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2010/06/30/455342.aspx so definitely check out the smart phones angle since that has been problematic and usually ensuring the IOS is updated is the first step, however if you know who added a new smart phone for Exchange synchronization recently you may want to go direct to them If you want to see if the problem is coming from an internal Device/Machine you can use one of the following MS USER MONITOR: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=9A49C22E-E0C7-4B7C-ACEF-729D48AF7BC9&displaylang=en and here is a link on how to use it http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Microsoft-Exchange-Server-User-Monitor.html And this is a great article as well http://blogs.msdn.com/b/scottos/archive/2007/07/12/rough-and-tough-guide-to-identifying-patterns-in-ese-transaction-log-files.aspxTroy Werelius www.Lucid8.com Search, Recover, & Extract Mailboxes, Folders, & Email Items from Offline EDB's and Live Exchange Servers with Lucid8's DigiScope

I installed ExMOn on mailbox server. NOw I put a time interval of 20 minutes . let me see the result after 20 min. There is a strange thing that one username is not there.. just a ' ? ' in username column. It has comsumed around 24% of CPU and bytes In/Out is also high. How can I find those user. Also if it is Dynamics CRM .. how we can resolve it. As we had CRM 4.0 installed and most of the users had it configured thru outlook . Also thru CRM only our mail shots are sending out.
