Exchange and leave a copy on a server option
Hi, I have a question regarding Exchange server and leave a copy on server option. I am relatively new in this area, never worked with exchange. This firm has SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007 SP1. They are currently using IMAP although they have Exchange in network. Exchange is used only for Calendar, Public Folder and Tasks (even address book is shared through public folder because aob is not working). Since they don't have trust in Exch. and since that I would loved to show them how exch. can handle mail and everything I though of configuring exchange in that way to just take an email from the server (ISP) but leave a copy so they can if something goes wrong keep using IMAP. Now the question is can exchange do that or not?? And related question is if I configure exchange in that way, will the users be able to use outlook anywhere and exchange Activesync with these double configuration when I configure those options.

I would suggest that you start by updating the server to Exchange 2007 SP3 to begin with, get the server on the latest release. SBS 2008 only has a POP3 connector, and that does not have the leave on server option. Therefore it is not possible to have the email in two places. If most people who place more of a trust in the ISP to store their email could see what most ISPs do for email, they wouldn't trust them again. Without a way to get the email in to Exchange, using Outlook Anywhere and Exchange ActiveSync is going to be close to useless. You will need to work with them on why they don't trust Exchange, which is one of Microsoft's flagship products. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources

Hi, thanks for quick reply. It is not as much about trust , it is about that they didn't have good admin. So they are more scared then untrusted. If I leave mails as they are for now and configure exchange activesync would that sync at least Calendar, Task, Contacts, Notes ???

Quote: “If I leave mails as they are for now and configure exchange activesync would that sync at least Calendar, Task, Contacts, Notes” Do you mean those folders of mailboxes on the exchange server? ActiveSync can synchronize the most of them “Exchange ActiveSync enables you to synchronize your e-mail messages, calendar, contacts, and tasks in your Exchange 2007 mailbox with a Windows Mobile powered device or Exchange ActiveSync compatible device. You cannot synchronize Microsoft Outlook Notes using Exchange ActiveSync” ---------Refer to <Exchange ActiveSync: Frequently Asked Questions> James Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com

Hi James-Luo thanks for reply, Yes, I was thinking about those folders (on exchange server), in the meantime I've read that notes are not supported. I was thinking if I can download from ISP mail server all mails, configure activesync and at the same time preserve mail on ISP mail server so other can work during prep. period of exchange. This exchange was upgraded from SBS 2003 to SBS 2007 but I think that upgrade was not finished. There are some errors about oab which I am trying to repair. That is why I need to download some mails to this server, but at the same time preserve them on ISP, so the Firm can continue with work if something doesn't work.

Well, Sembee’s right. After you retrieve mails from ISP via POP3 connector, SBS server will send “Delete” command to the ISP which is hardcodedJames Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com
