Exchange Server 2010 Cluster Issue
I have an Exchange 2010 based DAG consisting of three servers (2 Local and 1 Remote) The 2 local servers are behind a hardware load balancer, this distributes smtp, rpc and https traffic evenly between both servers. I have 5 databases, 4 are active on one local node and 1 is active on the other local node. Clients connect mainly from either Outlook 2007 or Web but there are a few who connect from Apple Mail, and 2 users who started using Iphone 4's via activeysnc this week. This morning we suddenly out of the blue had the following errors: Outlook clients were working but mail was not being sent and outlook was reporting "trying to update" but not getting anywhere. Web clients were getting timeout errors and on attempting to log back in were getting told your mailbox is not available. I could conenct via SMTP but when I tried to send mail I was getting: 4.3.2 Service not available All Exchange services were running fine Management Console was running fine and not showing any errors. Server CPU load was higher than normal (about 70-80%) The app event logs were seeing error messages like this: >>A budget charge was encountered that exceeded the limit of '5.16363333333333' minutes. Budget Owner: 'Sid~OKNA\markb~OWA~False', Component: 'OWA', >>CostType: 'Connection'. Some of these were coming from w3wp.exe and some from RPC. The best I have been able to guess is that this is related to the iphone4's and activesync as reported here: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2010/06/30/455342.aspx http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398 Does anyone know how I can tell if this was definitley what caused the issue or have any other ideas. Thanks Brett

Can't tell from your description, but if you suspect Iphones then I would stop the ActiveSync App pool on the Client Access Servers and see if things improve.

Have they updated the O/S on the phones to 4.0.1? It only takes one iPhone running version 4.0 to suck the brains out of a CAS. You can analyze the IIS logs and see how may connections are initiated by the iPhones. Or you can turn off ActiveSync for those people. If there's an IIS pool for ActiveSync on 2010 (don't remember if there is, but I *think* there's one) you could stop it (but that might pi$$ off a lot of other people). --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Sure, but I bet most Active Sync users are using Iphones! :P Could be. We have a couple hundred that use iPhones and a lot of them were indignant at the suggestion that <gasp!> Apple was at the root of their problems. Funny how all (well, at least the ones I know of) of those problems went away after updating the O/S on the devices. :-O --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

http://gsexdev.blogspot.com/2010/08/parsing-iis-log-activesync-traffic-for.html Parsing IIS Log ActiveSync Traffic for Information about Iphone IOS Versions Exchange 2003,2007,2010 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996908.aspx Get-activesycndevicestatistics can be used to view partnerships and device id which can be used to identify Iphones as well, but once the partnership is created, the version isnt updated so you cant tell if they are running at least 4.0.1 unless you break and recreate the partnership.

There's a lot to be said for good ol' grep, too. It may not be pretty, but it's fast. Just a FYI -- Apple's released 4.0.2 for iPhones and iPod Touch, and a new update for the iPad (I forgot the version number). Seems they're vulnerable to PDF and font exploits. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Yes. And regarding 4.0.2, it fixed a specific reproducible issue I was seeing. The inability to consistently send attachments from the Iphone via email.

How’s the issue currently? Is there any further information about the outlook and OWA connection? Please check the failed OWA connection when you check the IIS log Please also run ExBPA against the exchange servers for health checkJames Luo TechNet Subscriber Support (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/ms788697.aspx) If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tngfb@microsoft.com
