Exchange Server 2007 SP2 Not Deleting Transaction Logs After Backup
Hello,I installed SP2 last night, and everything went perfectly. I then did a backup of the Volume (D:) containing my Exchange storage. I watched it as it said it was checking Exchange, and continued to backup and finish. The backup says it finished and is the appropriate size, but I'm left with all of my transaction logs still. Any ideas?I checked my Storage Group Copy Status and both are set to Disabled. This is Exchange 2007 SP2 on Windows Server 2008 SP2Thanks,-Jeff

Check the backup log and event log for further information if you get any... Also make sure that you are taking backup of full Storage Group...Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Windows 2008 Built-in Backup which is supposed to be supported by Exchange 2007 SP2 Standalone server.

Backup log indicates a successful backup. Event log for Backup has IDs 1, 4 and 14 all of which indicate a successful backup. All stores are located on D: and D: is what was backed up (I did not backup C: as it is just the OS and programs, no data). There are no indications of any error here - is there a way to check which logs I still need according to exchange?

I thought maybe it would just decide to clean itself up after a reboot - no such luck. Going to try to burrow further into TechNet and see if I can find a way to identify which logs it thinks it needs. Still fairly stumped though.

Where is transaction logs located? I would suggest to backup C: drive along with D: and check... The transaction logs are on D: along with the storage groups. No Exchange Data lives on C:, just program files.

Few questions:- Are you using Volume Mount Points on D: by any chance?- Are there any events in the App log related to backup that happened during the time of backup? There should be events that explicitly call out start of the backup, as well as the successful or not outcome...

ae you making a VSS Full Backup or a VSS Copy Backup? I guess the VSS Full Backup will clean up the log files only.

No mount points. There are events indicating the start of the Exchange VSS backup and then the end of it about an hour and a half later - I'll post the full logs tomorrow when I'm back in the office.

Anyone with insight on this? I'd really like to be able to clean up these logs, there are quite a few of them now.

Jeff,I have one more thing to ask:Can you try doing a backup of both C: and D: drives? I understand that it should not be necessary, but I am curious... is it possible that Exchange still thinks that a working directory or something is on C:?If that does not work - the only other idea I have is to open a support ticket on this, we'd need to crank up some logging etc to see what is going on here...

Boy don't I feel like an idiot. I just accepted the recommended option without reading it. Though (imo) it should detect Exchange and ask or something.
