Exchange Server 2007 SP1 / ADUC Server 2008 x64
I installed Server 2008 x64 ADDC and created a new Distribution List in Active Directory Users and Computers and I see that it does NOT have an E-mail address in the Properties of the Distribution Groupthat I just created. I have installed Exchange Management Console and I do NOT see under Recipient Configuration, Distribution Group, this Distribution List. I DO see it in Active Directory Users and Computers. Is there a way to get it so that when I am using ADUC, I can ensure that a mailbox account is created without having to go into Exchange and do it? I mean isn't the point of ADUC to work WITH Exchange instead of my having to work with both? I am on Exchange Server SP1.

Dear Matthew: Thank you for posting in the Microsoft forum! From Exchange Server 2000/2003, the Exchange task/create mailbox/Exchange related attribute extend the ADU&C feature. When we setup an ESM, some DLL files have been registered for ADU&C so that the Admin UI is integrated. The ADU&C will show us the Exchange related attribute. However, from Exchange 2007, our development team re-designs the infrastructure code. We have a brand new Exchange Management Console (EMC) and Shell (EMS). And it is independent of ADU&C. We configure the users and groups in EMC which no longer extends the DLL for ADU&C so that the Exchange related attribute will not show up under ADU&C. OK, so now I have TWO Locations that I have to go to to setup a user? I might be confused, but if I understood what you said, it is INSANE! I have Microsoft Server 2008 Standard Edition x64 as an ADDS and DNS, and have a Microsoft Server 2003 Standard Edition R2 SP2 x64 with Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP1 x64 (obviously) and I created in AD, a Distribution Group for someone and I got everything setup as usual. I then get the word that a day has passed and no Distribution List showing up in the Global Address List of Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 SP1 and I go to Exchange Management Console, on the ADDS server, and find that it is NOT there, but IS in AD! I try to create a Distribution Group under Exchange Management Console, under Recipient Configuration, Distribution Group, however it "see's" that I have Group XYZ already. I have to go into AD and change Distribtuion Group from Group XYZ to Group XYZ1 and then I can create it in Exchange Management Console. I am then able to create it. HOWEVER, I do NOT see it in Active Directory Users and Computers under DOMAIN.COM, Distribution Groups. For me, this is a MESS! Why do I have TWO locations to work with? I am not able to MANAGE one system, having BOTH working together. I can get that I don't always have the ability to check / get e-mail, but I need to create a user in AD and then go to Exchange to set him up? What OTHER steps do I need to do NEXT? It is NOT easy, friendly, and functional. Please tell me that I did something wrong and that I am not missing something. I have gone in and checked Site and Services. OK I just found that Exchange Management Console is putting them in DOMAIN.com/Users folder instead of DOMAIN.com/Distribution Groups. Is there any place that I can tell the system to put a Distribution Group to Active Directory's defaul "Distribution Group" OU?

Dear Matthew: Based on my research, you can perform the following steps to achieve your goal: On the Exchange server 2007, open EMC, navigate to recipient configuration distribution group, right click distribution group, select new distribution group, select new group, click next, keep group type as Distribution, under organization unit, click browse, you can select the OU that you have created in AD, click next and new, and at last, click finish, Open ADUC, navigate to the OU that you selected in step 2, and check the effect. Thank you Rock Wang, you definately helped me and I feel embarassed that I was a typical USER and clicked "NEXT" all the way through! I should slow down next time. Thank you. In regards to the previous post, is there anything that can be done or will be done about having TWO systems? I would prefer to have ONE system to go to, with a "plug in" if you will, like in Exchange 2003 and Server 2003 where I could downlaod software, that allows me to have Active Directy Users and Computer and System Manager, .... All I want is to have the tabs back for Active Directory for Email. I am not sure why that is asking alot? I don't know anyone that thought that they were bad or a security issue? I know that I have to download software, that is not a problem. I just wonder if there's something that's missing or if this is something that will be changed? I can not be the only one frustrated by having to go to create a user, then create an email account. Which do I do first? I can create a new mailbox which will pressumably create a new user in EMC and I can put it into an OU of my choice. So we cannt see users Exchange related attribute in ADUC. And we can only create mailbox via EMC or EMS not ADUC. That it by-design.
