Exchange Server 2007 Basics
I have installed Exchange Server 2007 sucsessfully, i have created the mailboxes, i have added the accepting domain, i am able to logon as the user in OWA from inside the network. Before i change the port forwarding to point to the Exchange Server is there any thing i have missed? What else is required for me to start sending and receiving emails? This installation is replacing an Mdaemon mail server on the network so DNS is already configured, just want to know that everything is ready before i go change the port forwarding setting to point to the Exchange Server. (I know that there is so much more that i can confiure but i just want to start with the basics and then add other functions as i get to know them better.

Well, you have to make sure that you HUB Server is configured to accept incoming emails, here is what you need to do : Open Exchange Management Console - EMC. click on HUB Server under Server Configuration. in the right side screen, you will find all your HUB Servers which is installed under your exchange organization, if you have only one, then the name of your HUB Server will be listed in that screen, click on that server. in the below section or area of the right screen, you will find all your recieving connectors for that server. by default only two connectors will be thier, first one is "Client <Server Name>" , second one is "Default <Server Name>". click on "Default <Server Name>" connector, and right click , then choose "Properties" in the properties screen of that connector, go to the last tab, which is called "Permission Groups". make sure that the first option, which is called "Anonymous Users" is selected, if not, then you need to select it. if that option is not selected, then you will not be able to recieve emails from outside by your exchange server 2007. please let me know if the above steps helped you in solving your problem. Well, This parameter specifies the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to be displayed in the HELO banner or the EHLO banner. The default value is the authoritative domain. To specify a different domain name, type the FQDN in the text box. when you telnet your HUB server on port 25 , this FQDN will be displayed in the HELO or EHLO baner. you can use your public name, if you want to hid your internal server name or domain name. when you telnet your HUB Server from internal or external, this is what you will get output similar like that: 220 owa.alankar.net Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready at Sat, 15 Sep 2007 18:40:57 +0300 note that owa.alankar.netis the FQDN i used in mypublic domain where my internal domain is different than what is displayed in theHELO/EHLO Banner. please letme know if you need more help. Thank you for your reply, i asked only because the example given was a public address and i had the internal address in that field, no big deal.To see if i was able to receive email i changed the port settings on the firewall pointing to the new Exchange Server and sent an email to the postmaster and received it with out a problem, i replied several times and it failed to arrive? Could it be a port that needs to be forwarded? I am already forwarding SMTP, POP3, NNTP, SNMP all to the exchange server and there are no restrictions on outgoing traffic to the internet.Have i missed something?

Well, You need to create a Send Connector, by default there is no Send Connector is installed or configured on Exchange Server 2007 inorder to be able to send emails to outside. Creating a Send Connector is part of the Organizations Configuration, there is a tab called Send Connector. its simple wizard, just you need to know how your Exchange Server will resolve your external domains, either use your Internal DNS if your Internal DNS as the mechanizm to resolve external domains by forwarding to an External DNS Source, or configure your SMTP Connector with External DNS Source, or forward your emails to a smart host which will take the responsibility of sending your emails. check the following Microsoft Technet in order to understand Second Connector options: Send Connectors http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998662.aspx Please let me know if the above post did solve your problems.
