Exchange Server 2003 Standard would not send or receive mail
Afternoon, this morning our Exchange Server stopped sending and receiving mail. The even log started to record the following message:There were numerous threads about Exchange 2003 in a non-clustered enviroment, on a Windows 200 server which don't apply to my situation.Currently we are running Exchange 2003 Standard Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2) on a Windows 2003 Standard Version 5.2 (Build 3790.srv03_sp1_gdr.080813-1204 : Service Pack 1).I rebooted the server to resolve the issue, but I have been tasked with investigating the cause of the downtime, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.Thank you,HughEvent Type: ErrorEvent Source: MSExchangeSAEvent Category: General Event ID: 1031Date: 3/1/2010Time: 9:05:58 AMUser: N/AComputer: XXXXXXXXXXDescription:One of the System Attendant's task is blocked. I agree with Ed. Is AV running and scanning the c:\program files\exchsrvr folder? if yes, then you will need to exclude the AV scanning that folder and also the location of the databases and log files.

Hello,This problem occurs if the RootVer registry value is invalid. If the computer is running the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, set the RootVer registry value to 1.1.4322.0. To do this, follow these steps: Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Locate and then click the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ASP.NET Double-click the RootVer value, type 1.1.4322.0 in the Value data box, and then click OK. Quit Registry Editor. Try again for the error.(Some times you may need to restart the system) Regards from www.windowsadmin.info

If WMI gets hung up it can cause this problem. There was a fix (a longtime ago) for a similar problem:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q818204The other suggestions that AV software may cause this are also valid. If the AV software gloms onto your message tracking logs and doesn'tlet go the SA service will stall. If this happens regularly, and you've eliminated the AV as theproblem, you should run ExBPA to see if there are any othernot-so-obvious problems.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP
