Exchange Server 2003 Health Check tool
We have one Exchange 2003 server and one Windows Server 2003 domain with 6 domain controllers in 5 sites. When I run the health check tool on the Exchange server, one of the items in the report says "An error occurred during round-trip calculation between Exchange server (server.domain.local) and Active Directory server (dcserver.domain.local). The ping command returned the error '11010'." Upon further investigation the error is saying that the ping command is timing out (taking over 5 seconds). However when I ping the server in question from the command prompt, the server responds in an average of 7 milliseconds. Should I be concerned, or should I ignore this? Thanks very much in advance for any tips/advice regarding this. flux

try pinging with a larger packet size like 4096 and see if you still get a decent response. the tools uses larger packet sizes. If that passes ok and the server is running as expected and there are no errors or warnings in the event logs indicating an issue with communication to AD then I wouldnt be to concerned.

I would also make sure you have the latest version of the EXBPA loaded up. They have XML files that have the latest updates.Mark Morowczynski|MCT| MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:EMA 2K7,EDA Win 7,ES,SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

Thanks for the help guys. I can ping both my AD servers on the local segment with 4096 or even 8192 bytes and they both respond in under 100ms; usually the first response is somewhere in the 40-80ms range and then the next 3 are each like 1 or 2 ms. Also, the tool checks to make sure it's completely up to date every time its run. I did find some other issues by running the tool; I have moved the queue to a disk other than the system disk, and a few other things, so hopefully I'll have it performing a little better. Thanks again for the suggestions, it is very much appreciated. Sam "flux"
