Exchange Server 2003 Access over Static IP & Port Forwarding
I have an exchange server (only one) with a few users accessing it in our LAN. From home, I access my email account by making a VPN connection to my Sever 2003. Is there any other way to access the server without a VPN connection? If I am right, I can't set up OWA or Outlook Anywhere features withoutboth frontend and back end servers. In my case I only have a back end server. Can I set up some port fowarding in our ADSL router to access the exchange server? (not pop3) We have a static Internet IP.

Why can't you setup OWA? That should work fine, just make sure you use an SSL.Mark Morowczynski|MCSE 2003:Messaging, Security|MCITP:ES, SA,EA|MCTS:Windows Mobile Admin|Security+|http://almostdailytech.com

By default OWA will be installed along with Exchange 2003 server. So you can opt for that option. You can even configure the RPC-OVER-HTTP on same server. Below is the link which describes how to configure RPC-OVER-HTTP on single exchange server. http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Implementing-RPC-over-HTTPS-single-Exchange-Server-2003-environment.html

I would encourage you to get a SSL certificate for OWA. You can also use this certificate it manage Outlook Anywhere. As mentioned above there are some great articles on how to enable Outlook Anywhere which will bascially remove the need for a VPN connection to get connected to the Exchange server from the Outlook Client. The other thing to consider is how you ahve your network traffic setup. Are you going through a ISA box or firewall?SF - MCITP:EMA, MCTS

ThanksI have a DSL router with a static IP. VPN works fine and I am able to access the exchange server once the VPN is connected. I believe Oulook Anywhere needs a front end and back end server, where as our network has only one exchange server (back end).Rajesh

HiYou can access your your email account through OWA without front end server. If you build an exchange server, it is a back end default, and the OWA service is also setup default. You can learn more front and back end exchange structure refer to below link:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996980(EXCHG.65).aspx Once you setup the exchange server successfully, the users can access their mailbox via WEB int the intranet; If the users want to access their mailbox from the internet, below methods can be used:1. You can use the http://ExchangeServerPublicIp/exchagne to access the mailbox. But this way is not suggested. You can also apply for a DNS record for your exchange server, and then use http://ExchangeServerName/exhchange to access the mailbox. Sure, you'd better use HTTPS to access the mailbox, but you must install a CA server for it first, You can refer to below link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/327544 2. You also can configure the RPC OVER HTTP (Outlook Anywhere) on your current server, it is also need a CA server. How to do that, youcan refer to below link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833401 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998950(EXCHG.65).aspxNOTE Your company current IT system background is not safety for the exchange server. You'd better have an ISA firewall or other fire wall to protect your exchange server and publish your services related exchange.
