Exchange Server 2003 -ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password ...Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
Hi ppl,A peculiar problem with Outlook Express with Exchange 2003. The error displayed is :There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'mail.mysite.com.', Server: 'mail.mysite.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92Server Configuration:Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP1Exchange Server 2003 v. 6.5 with SP2Workstation Configuration:Windows XP with SP2Outlook Express 6Recently Outlook Express started displaying this error and continouly prompts for user name and password. Though the user name and password are correct. Every setting in OE are perfect. Note: Web Mail access is perfectly working with the same user ID and passwordTried configuring OE with another user, it works perfectly. Problem occurs with only one user. Tried on two different PCs but in vain. Password settings and policies are correct. This user account is enabled and Password never expires is set for this account. Was working perfectly untill yesterday. When googled, came to know that this is a known issue from MIcrosoft for Exchange 2000 and resolution is provided as to install SP3 for Exchange 2000. But since I have Exchange 2003+SP2 installed, this resolution is not applicable to my issue. I would really appreciate and thankful if anyone of you can help me out of this issue. Thanks again in advance.Regards,Digitizer

I'm pretty sure I have a solution to the problem...I just got it fixed about 15 minutes ago for one of my coworkers...on the Exchange account for that user, go to its properties...then click the Exchange General tab. Make sure your Alias is set to what you use as your Account Name when logging into something like Outlook Web Access. In other words, if your company has email set up with "firstname.lastname" as your alias, yet your account login name is actually "firstinitiallastname", you might have an issue with the account login name you're trying to use. For your POP3 setup, you'll need to make sure your Account Name matches what you have as your Alias on that Exchange General tab. If that doesn't work, then change your Alias to match what you have on the "User logon name" on the Account tab.Let me know if this works...I can email you print screens if this doesn't make sense...

I unexpectedly encountered the same problem yesterday morning. I use Office 2007, and have XP Sp2as my OS. While trying to check my email via Outlook, I was repeatedly asked to confirm my password. I could not access my incoming mail, and was told that this was due to my server not recognising/accepting my passworkd. But since my password and account details are saved on the computer and have never been changed, I knew that these were not the cause of the problem. I contacted my server, but received no assistance. I consequently searched different online forums for help, but could find nothing really useful (although it certainly seems that this is a common problem!). Most 'experts' appear to advise merely changing or retyping thepassword and POP settings as they may have been 'corrupted', but the extent of the help offered seems to end there. Acting on a bit of a whim, I decided to try resorting to system restore. Fortunately, by choosing a restore point created prior to the appearance of the Error 08x000CCC92 message, I was able to resolve the problem. A simple solution, and one that does not involve changing passwords or servers, or having to reinstall, disinstall or install software. I would be interested to know if this advice helps others ...
