Exchange Server 2003 (SBS) iPhone/iPads no longer sync
Hi All, We're running SBS2k3 sp2 in our office and up until Tuesday afternoon we had a number of iPads and iPhones correctly syncing with exchange. Since then, every time a manual sync is tried we get the error "cannot get mail". I've tried a number of things, including running the mail wizard, and verifying against a KB that the virtual directory settings for Exchange-OMA, OMA and Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync are correct. I can successfully get to the OWA via www.domain.com/exchange I can successfully get to the OMA via www.domain.com/oma www.domain.com/microsoft-server-activesync returns HTTP/1.1 501 Not Implemented Example from the log shows: 2010-09-01 19:04:09 W3SVC1 192.168.xxx.xxx PROPFIND /exchange-oma/user@domain.com/NON_IPM_SUBTREE/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync/iPhone/Appl879137DXY7H - 80 - 192.168.xxx.xxx Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync/6.5.7638.1 401 1 0 2010-09-01 19:04:09 W3SVC1 192.168.1.50 POST /Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync User=user&DeviceId=Appl879137DXY7H&DeviceType=iPhone&Cmd=Sync&Log=V4TNASNC:0A0C0D0FS:0A0C0D0SP:1C1I461S0R0S0L0H0P 443 domain\user xxx.xxx.xxx.xx Apple-iPhone1C2/801.293 500 0 0 We have a godaddy issued SSL certificate, and to my knowledge no settings have been changed in the last week other than the default.htm file has been replaced by an .asp file with a redirect. I believe I've eliminated this as the cause, since I switched it back out with the original file and it still wasn't working. Anyone got any suggestions? Layman's terms please since I'm feeling a bit out of my depth! CD

Actually, I think that the 501 error is expected when you logon interactively from a browser. If you remove and re-add the partnership what happens? Can you check activesync here? https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/ Also run ExBpa against the server. Nothing in the event logs when it fails?

Thanks for your quick reply Andy, Removing / Re-adding the partnership results in the same issue. Looking in the application event logs I find the Server ActiveSync error: Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [server.domain.local] User: [user@domain.com] HTTP status code: [400]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly. for several users. There are other references to ActiveSync, but they're informational and not errors. I've downloaded ExBpa and will run it shortly, along with https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/. Thought I'd post the above update before I do in case it helps. C - Update, ExBpa report lists 1 critical item (HeapDeCommitFreeBlockThreshold has not been set to 262144) Activesync Fails as follows: The Exchange ActiveSync test failed. "Host name mail.domain.com does not match any name found on the server certificate CN=www.domain.com, OU=Domain Control Validated, O=www.domain.com " Ok, so you need to fix that of course and ensure the certificate contains a subject or subject alternative name that matches what devices are connecting to.

Thanks for your patience! Okay, that's fixed - it now gets all the way to: ExRCA is attempting the FolderSync command on the Exchange ActiveSync session. The test of the FolderSync command failed. Additional Details Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response.

Perhaps? http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd439375(EXCHG.80).aspx which also leads to: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=817379 Also see; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937635

Thanks for that - I'd seen those KB articles, and have actually previously verified that all the settings listed in 937635 were correct. I'm not saying it's not the answer, but the concern I have with kb817379 is that it was working (and had been working for months) up until two days ago. No changes have been made to SSL or Forms based so I'm confused as to how that could be the problem! - Update - Since my last post, I've completed the steps on 817379 (Method 2, create a secondary virtual directory for exchange that does not require SSL...) with no joy. I've also tried disabling SSL and FBA again no luck. I even in desperation tried deleting and recreating the OWA, thinking it might have been damaged, but again, nothing. :( To clarify the above, I've now tried: Running the CEICW Comparing the VDir settings against 937635 Deleting and recreating the OWA Deleting exchange-oma and recreating it as in method 2 (817379), including turning off FBA prior to recreation. I still get the same error on running testexchangeconnectivity - "Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response. " Once again, totally out of ideas!

Hi, Based on my research, I found that iPhone/iPads still can be synced even through the “Exchange ActiveSync returned an HTTP 500 response” was received at TestExchangeConnectivity website. Hence, I suggest you sync iPhone with Exchange again. If it still does not work, please post the latest error message here for research. Meanwhile, please also refer to the following article to configure relevant settings to sync iPhone to SBS 2003. iPhone sync to SBS 2003 Thanks. Novak Wu-MSFT

Success! Turns out that the HTTP keep-alives was not enabled. The problem was compounded by the fact that the testexchangeconnectivity.com failed, because I was using that rather than an iPhone to troubleshoot. Frustrating to think I likely had the right settings several times along the way, but missed them because I was waiting for the tests to pass! In any event, it's working now. Thanks to both of you for your help.
