Exchange Server / OWA - Request timed out
Hello, I'm using Windows SBS 2008 SP2 64bit. For about 2 weeks, sometimes when I log in into one specific mail account through OWA (Outlook Web Access) and when I click on the messages in the Inbox folder or any other folder, the request ends up with an error message: Request Url: https://mail.XXX.XXX:443/owa/default.aspx?ae=Item&a=Preview&t=IPM.Note&id=RgAAAACAvf2GHnkBQpCbYxJ%2fFyUXBwBzzwIrKEwoQ57sbrsIfwEwAAJh4RYZAABzzwIrKEwoQ57sbrsIfwEwAGIXWEZSAAAJ User host address: X.XX.XXX.XXX Exception Exception type: System.Web.HttpException Exception message: Request timed out. Call stack No callstack available I noticed that if I immediately log in into another email account also through OWA, everything works fine. Sometimes after a couple of minutes or tens of minutes, the email account that threw the exception works fine. However, I once restarted the server in order to fix the problem. In the Event Viewer I saw some warnings with timeouts that were related to the date and time when OWA encountered difficulties. Do you have any idea why it's happening this? Thanks.

Hello Cosmin Nicula, is the Exchange Server on your SBS 2008 at the current patchlevel ? There are some hints that such problems were solved in Update Rollups / Service Packs for Exchange Server: check this for example : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949541/en-us Just a hint: Please be careful when patching Exchange 2007 on your SBS 2008, because there are special SBS - Exchange Updates / procedures : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982423/en-usGre, Christoph

Have you checked the IIS logs? What about the event viewer? Do you have another storage group to move this user to, just to see if it is database centric. One troubleshooting step to try to eliminate the network, open a command prompt and do a continuous ping of the mailbox server the user is on, re-create the issue and see if you drop any pings. Also, what SP/UR are you on with Exchange?

Hi Cristoph, An thank you for your quick response. I checked the version of Exchange Server and is 08.01.0393.01. I didn't explicitly installed any Update Rollup / Service Pack for Exchange Server. I just installed the updates that came through Windows Updates. Based on your own experience, do you think the problem will be solved if this updates will be installed, or the process is too risky to install them? Thanks.

Hi Russ, I checked the IIS logs located in inetpub/logs/LogFiles/W3SVC... and there is no relevant information between the interval in which the exception happened. In Event Viewer, under Windows Logs/Application category, there are multiple warnings with the source "MSExchange Extensibility" and with the Task Category "MExRuntime" with the same details: The execution time of agent 'BD_Hub2007_Agent' exceeded 300000 (milliseconds) while handling event 'OnSubmittedMessage'. This is an unusual amount of time for an agent to process a single event. However, Transport will continue processing this message. Regarding the storage group, I have only one, so I can't test to see if it is database centric. Unfortunately, I can't re-create the issue because it seems to appear randomly, so I can't do a continuous ping of the mailobx server the user is on. The version of Exchange Server 2007 is mentioned in the reply I gave to Cristoph. If you need any other information, please let me know. Thanks!

I would go down the route of getting the latest update exchange 2007 SP3 and roll up 7. It may fix your issues, these types are issues are more or less related to bugs or tampering with some OWA control files. If you update to SP3 the bin files will be replaced and may fix your issue if they were tampered with or if they are related to a known bug.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi, The problem seems occur Intermittently. I recommend you to run ExBPA to have a health scan first. Please try to post the detail related event log infromation here. Please monitor if the issue would only occur to OWA outside or inside the network. Also I recommend you to update your SBS server to the latest version and then check the issue again.
