Exchange Quota Message Service RPC problems and errors.
Recently, I installed the Exchange Quota Message Service to send customized notifications to staff at my organization according to size limit notification settings on the mailbox store. This service has not worked since it was installed. I have searched the Internet for solutions, and I have followed the procedures in the following articles: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb508861(EXCHG.65).aspx and http://www.msexchange.org/articles/Customizing-Mailbox-Limit-Warnings-Quota-Message-Service.html. Although the problems I am experiencing have been addressed on many forums, I have not been able to find an adequate solution. After installing EQMS on the Exchange 2003 sp2 server, adding the appropriate HKLM DWORD values, setting up an mail enabled AD account, and giving System access to the account, the following problems occur: When I choose to Start Quota Maintenance in EMS, I receive Exchange Quota Service: The RPC Server is Unavailable. When I run Services.msc and go to the Properties of the Microsoft Exchange Quota Service, the service status is Stopped although the Status column of the service says Started. The following error is logged in the Application log of the Event Viewer Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Application ErrorEvent Category: (100)Event ID: 1000Date: 3/31/2010Time: 2:18:42 PMUser: N/AComputer: Server NameDescription:Faulting application QuotaService.EXE, version 6.5.7830.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x616e36af. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I posted this question yesterday, but for some reason it was removed from the forum. Recently, I installed Exchange Quota Message Service on my organization's Exchange 2003 sp2 server. I have set a notification limit on the mailbox store at 500 mb. I have configured the service following instructions in Microsoft's "The Microsoft Exchange Server Quota Message Service" article as well as Henrik Walther's "Customizing Mailbox Limit Warnings with the Quota Message Service." As far as I can tell, everything is properly configured for EQMS (service is installed, e-mail activated ADUC account configured, System access to ADUC account, HKLM DWORD values, .pst files copied to Mailbox), but when I try to do a Manual Quota Run using Start Quota Maintenance in EMS, I receive the error, "Exchange Quota Service: The RPC Server is Unavailable." When I run Services.msc and start the Microsoft Exchange Quota Service, the service appears to be Started in the Services.msc Status column, but when I go into the service Properties, the service appears to be stopped. The following error is logged in the Exchange Server System logs: Event Type: ErrorEvent Source: Service Control ManagerEvent Category: NoneEvent ID: 7034Date: 4/1/2010Time: 11:46:25 AMUser: N/AComputer: Exchange ServerDescription:The Microsoft Exchange Quota Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). Thanks for any advice.

Hi, I find your prior post, now I merge to it. Please check the regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeQuotasvc\Parameters\common name the value should be /cn=Recipients/cn=QMS If not, please change it. Frank Wang

Hi Frank, I checked the registry and the value is "/cn=Recipients/cn=qms". I continue to receive the RPC error when attempting to start a manual quota run. Also, when I remotely logged onto the Exchange server this morning, an error message appeared indicating that there is a problem with the Quota Message Service and the service had to be shut down.

I'm getting the sense that this Quota Message Service has some problems that cannot be repaired as I have read exactly the same issues described in a multitude of forums, but no real answers have been provided anywhere. I think I'll just get rid of the Quota Message Service altogether.
