It is not mandatory to migrate public folder during Exchange migration, As you had not used Public Folder in Exchange 2007, So you can delete that from Exchange 2007

If you don't have any public folders to migrate don't worry because it's not mandatory. Do you want to create some public folders in 2013? What i do recommend is that you just don't shut down the 2007 server. You need to remove the public folder database there and decommission that server. Any reason why you're not removing the 2007 server from the organization? Also if all users are already moved to 2013 (i assume they are as you said that you've had the 2007 shut down), and for some reason you don't want to decommission the 2007 server (that is the recommended path), you should try the following cmdlet:

Set-OrganizationConfig -PublicFoldersEnabled None

you can also try step 6 from the following link:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx

which basically locks the access to public folders in 2007. Step 8 of the same link unlocks access to public folders in 2013.

But again why not decommission the 2007?

hope that helped

Hi Yasser. If you need to decommission exchange 2007 than don't worry about the public folders. What you can do to see if your 2013 databases are using the 2007 public folder database is:

get-mailbox |fl name, *public* (on the 2013 exchange management shell)

also there's no harm on doing the steps i described on my last answer, although i think that you won't need to do that. Usually when a public folder database is configured to be used by a mailbox database, when uninstalling the mailbox role you get an error stating that and you're not able to remove the role. So give it a try and remove the role. Let us know if you're getting any errors or if you can do a clean removal.

Hi,

Since you don't use public folders in Exchange 2007, there is no need to migrate public folders to Exchange 2013.

Before you remove Exchange 2007 server, you need to remove public folder database first. And please place the Exchange 2007 server offline temporarily and make sure Exchange 2013 works well. Then you can uninstall Exchange 2007 server.

Besides, here is a blog which may help you for your reference.

Yasser, just to add some more info. Like everyone is saying if you don't use the public folders you don't have to worry. If your problem is that when you shut down the 2007 server users get a basic auth pop up, the way around it is either to remove the exchange 2007 (highly recommended) or follow the steps of the migration that block the access to the 2007 public folders. As an example when you run Set-OrganizationConfig -PublicFoldersLockedForMigration:$true on the 2007 EMS (you can restart the 2007 information store service to force it to be applied quickly) users will no longer try or be able to access the 2007 public folders.

then by running Set-OrganizationConfig -PublicFolderMigrationComplete:$true the public folders will be available (if existing) in 2013

But again just remove the server with a clean uninstall and you should be good.

MSExchange.org has a good walkthrough that you can follow:

http://www.msexchange.org/articles-tutorials/exchange-server-2013/planning-architecture/exchange-2013-preview-public-folders-part1.html

There are no PF stores in 2013, there are now mailboxes that handle this.

Hi,

If you have public folders on Exchange 2007, and you want to migrate to Exchange 2013, you can refer to the following article to perform migration.

Use serial migration to migrate public folders to Exchange 2013 from previous versions

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/library/jj150486(v=exchg.150).aspx

After you migrate public folders successfully, Exchange 2013 users should access public folders on Exchange 2013 server.

Hi,

If you have public folders that have a backslash in the name, then you will get output when you run this command you mentioned.

If there aren't public folders that have a backslash in the name, then it returns nothing and this is expected.

why this shown to me when i move the replica

February 9th, 2015 12:08am

Hi,

Have you finished the public folder migration to Exchange 2013?

In Exchange 2013, there is no replication between public folder mailboxes. This is not the same as what we replicate public folders in Exchange 2007.

After you migrate public folders to Exchange 2013 successfully, please remove public folder database using the Remove-PublicFolderDatabase command.
