Remove the MX record with the priority of 20. If the host associated with the MX record with a priority of 10 is busy then the secondary MX will be used. If the secondary MX "is not used for mail" they why is it in DNS? In any case, the host that failed was "mail.mydomain.com" (your primary MX). Why not use a network monitor (e.g. wireshark) when you're performing the test. If you don't see a connection then your problem lies somewhere "in front of" your Exchange server. Check your firewall logs and see if anything's logged there. If you can't find any trace of the connection attempt then the problem may be some bogus static route at an ISP. Those are really hard to get fixed. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Hi guys, server running Ex2007 and for strange reason inbound mail from any domain takes really long to reach, but outgoing mail seems to be working fine, the external folks arent getting in bounce back or undelivered messages, the mail just takes really long to get to us. I'm not seeing any errors in the event logs, and nothing in the mail queues, but i did do a connectivity test and i got this error Testing inbound SMTP mail flow for domain user@mydomain.com. ExRCA failed to test inbound SMTP mail flow. Test Steps Attempting to retrieve DNS MX records for domain mydomain.com. One or more MX records were successfully retrieved from DNS. Additional Details MX Records Host mail.mydomain.com, Preference 10 Host mail2.mydomain.com Preference 20 Testing Mail Exchanger mail.mydomain.com One or more SMTP tests failed for this Mail Exchanger. Test Steps Attempting to resolve the host name mail.mydomain.com in DNS. The host name resolved successfully. Additional Details Testing TCP port 25 on host mail.mydomain.com to ensure it's listening and open. The specified port is either blocked, not listening, or not producing the expected response. <label for="testSelectWizard_ctl12_ctl06_ctl01_ctl01_tmmArrow">Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it</label> Additional Details The connection was established but a banner was never received. However if i do a port scan and smtp test on mail.mydomain.com using mxtoolbox and all my necessary ports they are open and tests are successful, i believe that somehow mail is trying the reach the second address which is not used for mail, but i thought the preference number would have fixed that. Any ideas? Thnaks

A delayed delivery report could be the result of an Internet connection issue, spam filter, offline server, or any number of other causes. Have you got message tracking enabled? If not then you are going to be a little limited on what you can do. Are these internal or external messages? If external messages check the SMTP headers to see when the messages were delivered to the server. Go to the below similar issues, see if that can help you. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/1efa521a-eed9-4e35-9ac2-c9156140155e http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrtransport/thread/71b9a21b-6c25-4c24-8191-a4f680f431fa Thanks
