Exchange Database clean-up
I have 9GB space left on my Exchange 2000. I have used 220GB for exchange storage. I have a 5 months of 5MB log files in storage folder. Can I remove them to get more free space? Also, my tape backup is not working now. And I want to copy the mailbox database to the network drive as my backup. Can I just copy the priv*.edb, tmp.edb and priv.stm? or I have to copy all the log files as well. Where can I set auto-delete for the transaction log files? Thanks in advance John

Hi, Sounds like your first priority should be getting a backup! So, I suggest you idea of backing up to another machine on the network is the first port of call. Map a drive to a location with plenty of storage space and then run NTBackup and set it to backup all your storage groups. When you run a backup of Exchange the log files will be truncated so that will clear your 5 month backlog. Deleting these files is not recommended. You should simply perform a backup. Let me know how you get on. Cheers Nathan

I just wanted to re-enforce Nathan's great reply. It's extremely important not to manually delete the transaction logs as that may render your Exchange installation unusable. Performing a full online backup will truncate the transaction logs as Nathan states and free up your drive space. Performing regular, full, backups manages these log files and ensures that if you ever have hardware failure that you can restore the Exchange stores. I highly recommend that you read the documentation at the link below in order to fully understand how to protect your Exchange data: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125070.aspx David.

Hi: I have three questions that are probably pretty basic, so go ahead and roll your eyes now... Okay! Is the name of my exchange server "store" my server name? The next two are backup questions.. To back up to a computer on the network, do I need to do something special beyond browse to it and tell it okay at that point of the back up configuration? Because, I've done that twice and it isn't selecting it. The other back up question, I want to backup to a removable hard drive 5 days of the week and to the other network computer one day per week. Is that possible? Yes, I know, the best answer is a tape back up .. that is on the list!!

Hi, 1. By default the name of your Exchange server store is "Mailbox Store (Servername)" 2. When you say to backup to a computer on the network, I assume you mean to backup Exchange to a computer on the network, right? If so, then that is possible. You can use NTBackup on the Exchange server and have it backup to a file on the remote system usinga mapped drive for instance. If you mean to backup from a computer on the network, then you will need to make sure your backup software supports backing up Exchange remotely. What are you using to backup Exchange? 3. Again, yes that is possible, it just depends how you config you rbackup software. Cheers Nathan
