Exchange 7 gives an error cannot find Global Catalogue running on a Virtual 2003 X64 Server
Hi, I have a 2008 Server running on a Dell 2900 with Hyper V. I have installed Exchange 7 on the same server without any problems. Things started going wrong when I couldn't install Blackberry BPS on the same box andas it happens although Blackberry support X64, they don't support X64 on a WS 2008 box but only a WS2003 box ! So I thought OK, virtualise a WS2003 X64 and install Exchange on that and hook up the Blackberry server on that ! Simple yeh ? NOPE ! The Virtual server is running 100%using the AD of the physical DC etc ..., butthe Exchange installation does not go further giving the error: Could not find the Global Catalogue. Thinking about it,it has already found the Global Catalogue, otherwise a set of different errors would come up (user can not be found, can not log on, etc...). Is this a MS bug ? It's a crazy error -I have alreadychecked the GC in the ntds etc... I read in another thread something about the synch at IP level between the virtual server and the physical server, but no solutions found yet.

By "Exchange 7" I'll assume you mean Exchange 2007.You installed the Hyper-V host machine on the same machine as you did Exchange, or do you mean Exchange 2007 is a VM within? The former is extremely ill advised. You then list comments about performance issues - no wonder - this is not a healthy design.I'm 99.999% sure its not a "MS bug", but rather something with your configuration. Your above comments dont even mention what you've done with your domain controllers, or how you've configured your virtual networks, so please elaborate on these items before we comment further.

I think was unclear. Sevrer 2008 physical machine :2008 server OS + AD. Hyper V Server: WS2003 X64 running Exchange 2007 within it. No performance issues. The only issue left in the Echange pre install check is 'can not find global catalogue', with only one item left to resolve. I don't think Exchange 2007 workswhen virtualised. It seems to need a physical machine.

Hi, I agree with Mike. We do not recommend you to install AD role and Hyper-v role on one Windows 2008 Server. Besides, please use dcdiag and netdiag to check if the network has been configured correctly. You either don't read the text or don't know what to respond or suggest. READ THE TEXT. You don't have an answer becaause you don't have a cluewhether Exchange 2007 runs or not in Hyper V. The Server is 2003 X64 in Hyper V. READ THE TEXT. Unless you test it and knowwhat I am referring to, please do not reply back with these remarks.

You're 100% right. I've never evenseen Exchange before. I just wanted to look cool, butI guess it didn't work.

Similar issue here. New 2K8 DC,DNS. New 2k3 x64 on same domain attempting to install Exchange 2k7. Get cannot find GC error, even though it obviously logged into the network so it would be able to find the GC????? I've checked the DNS and GC settings. Only one active nic per box. Not exactly sure where to go with this. These boxes are VMs. One on ESX 3.5 (2k8) and other on ESX 4.0 (2k3x64).

Shylok, is the GC in the same AD site? This is also a requirement. Mike Crowley A+, Network+, Security+, MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator Do you still have Exchange 2000? Looking to upgrade to Exchange 2010? Read how.

Could seem stupid, but: network limitations? Exchange configuration? Userenv errors in the logs? how many DCs are running in your network? dcdiag and netdiag: please post results here. Diego Castelli

Diego, will run dcdiag/netdiag. Almost ran then last night but will do so now. Exchange won't even install so there's no configuration issue. And there's only the one 2K8 DC which is also the GC. I'm not sure how it figures it can't find the GC if I logged onto the domain from that same box...
