Exchange 5.5/2003 Mixed Mode Global Address List Issue
I have recently installed an Exchange 2003 server into our Exchange 5.5 organisation. These seem to be working in mixed mode without to many problems. I have a couple of mailboxes on the 2003 server and the majority on the 5.5 server. From my 5.5 mailboxes I can see the 2003 user in the Global Address list. When I go into my 2003 mailbox I get no Global address list at all, although I did briefly after installation and for some reason this stopped working. Has anybody had similar problems and could you give me some guidance on the problem.Another problem is when I click on the recipient of the sender I get the following message. This may be caused by the first issue I am having with the global address list."Cannot perform the requestedoperation. The command selected is not valid for this recipient. Microsoft Exchange Server is not configured to support details templates in your language (English). Contact your system administrator. I would be very grateful of any assistance with this problem.

Is E55 installed on NT4?Run DS/IS consistancy checker on exchange 5.5 server, seems like directory replication is not working properly or there is some replication issue with ADC replication. We may need to troubleshoot the ADC replication to the SRS, but if the content is there, then it is a 5.5 Dir Rep issueAny specific events in E55 and E2k3 Server? Hi ArunThank you for your response. E5.5 is installed on Win 2000. Some replication seems to be taking place. When I have created 2003 mailboxes they are showing in the E5.5 global address list. The only message I can see in the logs on the E2k3 server is refering the the updating of the offline address book.Event Type:WarningEvent Source:MSExchangeSAEvent Category:OAL Generator Event ID:9337Date:06/05/2009Time:05:06:17User:N/AComputer:MAIL1Description:OALGen did not find any recipients in address list '\Global Address List'. This offline address list will not be generated. - Default Offline Address List For more information, click http://www.microsoft.com/contentredirect.asp.

Jason,here are few KB's which you need to read.183669 XADM: Troubleshooting Intersite Directory Replicationhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;183669243438 XADM: Replication Doesn't Work; Event 1171 with Parameters 9 and 111http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;243438Arun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

I will take a look thank you. Another point to mention is the Global address list in the E2k3 mailboxes does not even show e2k3 addresses. I have checked in Outlook and the properties of the address list and this is showing the address book provider as our global catalogue server (our win2k ad controller)and not the exchange server. Is this correct?

It seems to me like a OAB issue not the replication? so here is a question for you.If you create two users with mailbox in AD.User A - Mailbox in E55 and User B - Mailbox in E2k3.Send some test email to each other - are you able to?.Are you able to see each other in GAL - mean User A is able to see User B in outlook GAL? and vice-versa.How about if you configure outlook profile in online mode for User B and check?, did you checked the same with OWA as well.As per the event i feel your Recipient Update Service is not pointing to the proper GC.Arun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

UserA is an Exchange 5.5 user UserB is an Exchange 2003 user UserC is an Exchange 2003 user UserA Can send mail to users B & C and can see them listed in the GAL User B & C Receive mail ok from UserA and can reply to the mail from User A and this is received. If user B & C tries to send a message to another user on Ex5.5 it will fail saying Microsoft Outlook does no recognize the user. No users show in the GAL If user B & C try to send each other they also get Microsoft Outlook does no recognize the user. No users show in the GAL The profiles are running in online mode for all users A, B & C

When this issue started? any specific change on the server?User B and C can do self email? I guess both the user B and C are on different e2k3 server? Will you run ExBPA and check the warning and critical errors in to it?Arun Kumar | MCSE - 2K3 + Messaging | ITIL-F V3

I cant think of any specific changes that took place. I can remember opening the English details template but that is all. User B & C are on the same e2k3 server. I have run the best practise analyzer and this only reports that we do not have the optimum memory settings for exchange.I have exchnage install on a server which is a member of the domain but this is not a AD controller. Does exchange need to be installed on the GC server?

Jason, I believe it has something to do with OAB in public folders. Outlook's GAL is OAB in cache mode. Can you see the preview of your Global Address List? In your Public Folders, do you have more than one Offline Address Book with the organization tag? Roger5
