Exchange 2013 server filling up C: disk

Hi,

Originally my OS/Exchange disk was around 200GB with maybe 50GB free, this was in production with all the users on it. I've been slowly increasing it in 10-15GB increments to the point that its now 365GB with only 40GB free.

My other DAG member server is fine, its only using about 150GB for OS and Exchange.

So on the trouble server I've checked \Logging\ and its only consistently sitting around 30GB as per Microsoft design.  The \Transportroles\Logs are only about 4GB

There is 18GB in \TransportRoles\Data\Temp and I could probably delete some of the stuff from over 6 months ago? But the new stuff is only 1GB from the last few days, so this is not the culprit for the continous data increase.

Obviously I store my Logs and DBs on other disks.

Any suggestions on whereelse  to look?

Please do not respond with links relevant to people who are having issues/concerns with the fact that the %ExchangeInstallDir%\Logging went from 1GB to 30GB going from Exchange 2010 to 2013. I fully understand that and I am fine with it. %ExchangeInstallDir%\Logging is not my issue, there is another folder somewhere that is filling up. But I can't find it.

Try to find the OS level or other program biggies, rather than Exchange on C: drive...

As Slava suggested some tool can help to find those directories...

Also look at the page file settings, if it is set to manage itself on C: drive and expanding over the time...

Hi,

It is posible the window server itself log that filling up your space, try navigate to below path and check the size.

C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs

you may delete the log file (with administrator right) if possible. If you think the event log file important then you might move to another pc or storage.

You can delete that stuff in the TransportRoles\Data\Temp for sure. That was a bug fixed in CU5 I think. So ensure you are running the latest CUs.

I know the other stuff looks normal, but consider also:

Hi,

Transportrole uses and holds many temporary files during the course of a mail message. Most of these get overwritten with new ones.

I remommend you to move them off to another local drive with enough space or removable media because deleting a file may have unpredictable results later.

Regards,

David

Apart from suggested ideas, I would like to refer you on a proficient application Lepide health monitoring tool that provides the option to continuous check on the status of critical services, usage of disk & CPU, and graphical representation of important health aspects of Exchange server so that, you can resolve the issues much before they impact end users in an organization.

Slava: Thanks for the suggestion, but we have a policy against 3rd party tools on the Exchange servers (or most servers for that matter) and also by default, many Exchange directories I don't have access to even though I am admin on the server. I can only take access to each folder as I browse through the installation directories and I'm not game to change the inheritable permissions on the Exchange folders.

Amit: As per Microsoft best practices the pagefile is a fixed size of installed RAM + 100MB. Not being a SBS server, this of course is a dedicated Exchange server. There are no other applications installed, just windows and Exchange.

Renne: thanks, but the windows event logs are only 4GB and they seem to flush fine over time as designed. You might still be right that its some Windows folder, but I can't think of any others to check. All of windows comes up as only 20GB though.

Andy: Thanks, that definitely helps and I'm on CU7 so thats done! But of course this folder wasn't increasing in size, so its not the root issue. Some other folder keeps growing over time.

David: thanks, but as mentioned these were from 7 months ago and older and then nothing until todays date. I didn't delete the ones from today only the ones from 2014. So looks like Andy is right as we installed CU7 around that time and these temp files stopped being created and not deleted.

I might just have to bite the bullet and click through the entire Exchange installation directory, taking access on each folder individually so I can check the folder sizes.

Any further suggestions please let me know.
