Exchange 2013 in new domain, migration from 2010 in old domain; 2010 SP3 and AD schema upgrade required
Hi, We have Windows Server 2008 r2 with Exchange 2010 SP2 in the current live working domain. All working nicely. However, we are building a brand new infrastructure which will be Windows Server 2012 with Exchange 2013 (latest updates/service pack) There will be a 2way trust between the 2 domains and we will be migrating accounts and mailboxes over the course of a few weeks for 200 users. My understanding is that we will need to upgrade Exchange 2010 SP2 in the current domain to SP3 so that we can perform New-MoveRequests and get the mailboxes over to the Exchange 2013 environment as we will be in a co-existance situation for some time while the mailboxes are migrated. I understand that upgrading to SP3 will involve updating the AD Schema in the current domain. Can someone please confirm I have this correct.. Thanks Nathan

Hi Yes you will need SP3 if you plan to do remote mailbox moves (which is the recommended migration method) and this does require an AD schema update. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/jj965774(v=exchg.141).aspx Cheers, Steve

Steve - is there an 'unrecommended' migration path that doesn't involve upgrading 2010 to SP3 first?? Nathan

Sure, you can export all of your mailboxes to PST and then import them again or use a 3rd party tool like Quest which is an expensive option. I've done migrations using both of these methods which is why I say the native Exchange migration is recommended, however you organisation may have a different view. Is there a problem with installing SP3 on your existing severs? Cheers, Steve
