Exchange 2013 failed CU1 to CU5 update. Trying to get CU1 working again

Hello all,

Currently running a single server installation of Exchange 2013 CU1 on Server 2008 R2.

Checked prerequisites for updating to CU5 and all looked good.

Launched the CU5 install via GUI, not command prompt, which from what I remember when I installed CU1 using the GUI didn't work very well.

Anyway, CU5 failed telling me I have to uninstall CU1. Checked a couple forums and found the same answer.

Tried to uninstall CU1 via Programs and Features, but that failed because it couldn't find a file. Also tried Change and that errors out saying the installation failed and to run setup from an installation media location.

So, I enabled the services that where disabled by either the CU5 install or the CU1 uninstall and started chasing and correcting errors. I've got it to the point that where it looks like everything is working, but I can't send or receive. I'm trying to find an error message somewhere, but I'm not having any luck finding any.

I've tried to use the Queue Viewer and suspend the queue, but nothing shows up in the queue. I've looked at send and receive connectors and they look OK.

I've been up all night and I'm at a loss right now and could really use some help getting this train back on the tracks.

Thank you,

Dennis

First you will have to install Exchange 2013 SP1

After installing SP1, you will install CU5

With SP1 it looks as if I also need Windows Management Framework 4.0.

So, I need to install SP1 AND Windows Management Framework 4.0.

Then install CU5?

The answer is, YES...

Hello,

Based on my knowledge there is no need to install SP1 before CU5. Exchange 2013 CU5 is full install package.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/05/27/released-exchange-server-2013-cumulative-update-5.aspx

"Customers running any previous release of Exchange Server 2013 can move directly to Cumulative Update 5 today."

Hope it helps,
Adam

I agree, but I had faced this issue while installing/updating CU5 directly on CU3 Server.
After Installing SP1, update of CU5 went fine.

Adam, I read the same thing, but CU5 wouldn't install with CU1 installed. My issue is that after attempting to install CU5 I couldn't uninstall CU1. I don't know if the reason I couldn't uninstall CU1 was because of changes CU5 had made or because of another Windows update.

Since I'm stuck with CU1, I'm hoping installing SP1 will get things working and then I'll install CU5.

Thank you both for your quick responses.

Can you post the exact error that is coming up in the below setup log file regarding to CU5 failure and telling to uninstall CU1?

Hi,

As Amit suggested, the setup logs will help us analyze the cause of the failure.

In addition, the following article for your reference:

Upgrade existing Exchange 2013 installation to CU5 step-by-step

Thanks.

I got this working yesterday about noon, but after being up all night I needed to get some sleep before I responded with what finally worked.

You can in fact update from CU1 to CU5, but you cannot have ANY "Interim Updates" for CU1 installed. In my case it wasn't the CU1 preventing the install, but the interim update named: 'Security Update for Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (KB2874216) 15.0.620.34'.

With the interim update installed you will get the following error no matter what you try and install (I got it trying to install SP1):

Unable to remove product with code 4934d1ea-be46-48b1-8847-f1af20e892c1. Fatal error during installation. Error code is 1603. Last error reported by the MSI package is 'Unable to install because a previous Interim Update for Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 has been installed.  Please use Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the Interim Update before running this setup again.'.

To uninstall this interim update the user that your logged in as needs to be a member of an Exchange Server administration group. To facilitate this I added administrator to the Server Management and Exchange Servers security groups located in the OU Microsoft Exchange Security Groups. After the install I removed Administrator from those groups.

If you're not a member of the right security groups and you try to uninstall KB2874216 you'll get this error:

Product: Microsoft Exchange Server - Update 'Security Update for Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (KB2874216) 15.0.620.34' could not be removed. Error code 1603. Additional information is available in the log file C:\Users\ADM~1\AppData\Local\Temp\MSI5373b.LOG

The important error message in C:\Users\ADM~1\AppData\Local\Temp\MSI5373b.LOG is:

msgErrorExchangeAdmin = The user who's currently logged on doesn't have sufficient permissions to install this package. You need at least Exchange Server Administrator permissions on the current computer to complete this task.

After adding the Administrator to the security groups I rebooted my server to make sure the change took effect.

Once the interim update is removed, reboot.

CU5 should now install.

I hope this will help someone and thank you to the guys that gave their input.

Good Luck!

Dennis

I have some further experience on this, which I will post here as this thread, and in particular dennisstickles reply, helped the most.

I learned that I needed to un-install "'Security Update for Exchange Server 2013 Cumulative Update 1 (KB2874216)" but my problem was running the un-install from Control Panel did nothing, it came up with a progress bar which then closed with no errors or anything.

Creating a registry value of:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer] "Logging"="voicewarmupx"

Created a log file in my %TEMP% folder which claimed I didn't have permissions to run the update. I added myself (the domain admin) to the Server Management and Exchange Server security groups with no change.

I then realised the aborted attempt at installing CU5 had disabled a load of services including Remote Registry.  So enabling and starting that got me another step forward but then, during the un-install of KB2874216, it asked for the ExchangeServer.msi file.  I tried pointing it to the one on the Exchange 2013 disc with no luck so then downloaded the last successful update (which for me was CU1) and pointed it at that. Hey-presto the un-install of KB2874216 completed and after a refresh it disappeared from the installed updates list! Another re-boot, to be safe, later and I was installing CU5 again

which, maybe because I left logging turned on for Installer, took AGES! So maybe if you get this far, turn that off before running the final install!
