Exchange 2013 New-MailboxExportRequest create too large .pst

Hello!

I have a Win Server 2012 and installed Exchange 2013 on it. I would like to create backup all mailboxes on every day to export all mail data to a .pst file. First I tried to use the New-MailboxExportRequest powershell command in command line, but I recognised that the created .pst file is too large. There are 4 simple e-mail address in the mailbox, and the size of exported pst file is too larga(about 600-700Mb). Why? When I delete these 4 mails and run the export command again, the size of created pst file not small or 0, but 600-700Mb.

The comman: New-MailboxExportRequest -Mailbox John -FilePath "\\server\PST\john.pst\"

Thank You,

Adam

Hi

You should look at using Windows Backup, DPM or a 3rd party tool to backup your Exchange database as it will flush the logs correctly.

Exporting to mailbox is not the correct method for this. You generally export mail to PST if the mailbox is corrupt or if a user leaves etc.

I would not recommend the approach you are taking to backup your Exchange Data.  There are alot of issues with pst files (they get corrupt, anyone can just swipe them up and attach them to Outlook) and it will take you longer to recover all of your data from a pst file than it would to restore the entire database.  (Plus with this method Database Logs do not truncated/pruned).  Take a look at a few of these links regarding supported backup methods for Exchange.

Ultimately it's your decision on how and what you want to back up your data, but if it was me I would look at one of these other approaches.

The Windows Backup is suitable for backup the mailboxes? Will I restore the on of user e-mail when he delete his e-mail after i created a backup?

Thanks.

You use single item recovery option.. Restoring from database backup would require recovery mailbox when you re performing restores.

Hi Adam,

Yes, you can use Windows backup to back up and restore your Exchange databases. What's more, when restoring a database to its original location, the database can remain in a dirty shutdown state and be mountable by the system. When restoring to an alternate location, the database must be manually brought into a clean shutdown state by using Eseutil.exe.

For your reference:

Hope this can be helpful to you.
