Exchange 2013 CU8/CU9 - Hidden Reading Pane - New Mail and Group Members

Hello,

I just migrated an old organization of 300 Users from Exchange 2007 to a DAG of two Exchange 2013 CU8 servers. All went smoothly. Now I upgraded the DAG group to CU9.

I noticed a strange behaviour using OWA. If I configure a user to hide "reading pane", I try to compose a new message selecting "New email" it is presented the new compose window, the address is like: "https://owa.contoso.com/owa/#viewmodel=IMailComposeViewModelFactory&wid=76&ispopout=1"

In this window if I click "To" to select recipient I can browse my contact, instead, if I select Groups I can see all my groups in the left pane but the the list of members (in the right pane) is not presented. In the right pane I can see the name of the group and the loading icon.

If I configure the user to show the reading pane on the right when I click to compose a message the compose form is presented on the right pane of the OWA window and if follow the same procedure described above I can see the group members.

The last thing I noticed: with the hidden reading pane if I copy the link presented in the new window, the one in the format:

"https://owa.contoso.com/owa/#viewmodel=IMailComposeViewModelFactory&wid=76&ispopout=1" in a new tab of the browser or in a new window of the browser the members are showed correctly.

In other words: The problem seems to be related to the window opened automatically by OWA when I click "New Email".

I have another Exchange 2013 DAG running with CU7 installed and I can't replicate the error. Unfortunately is a different installation so I can't say that the problem is related to CU8 and above.

Someone could help me?

Thanks in Advance,
Davide

Hello Simon,

I noticed that the problem seems to be related to the new browser window opened automatically to compose a new messagge. Changing the EmailComposeMode from Inline to SeparateForm using: "Set-MailboxMessageConfiguration" a new window is always opened indipendently from the reading pane settings.

I tried, just to be sure that this behaviour isn't related to some post-install script of CU8 to remove the OWAs virtual-directory in "Default Web Site" and in "Exchange Back End". I rebuilded both directory on both Exchange servers but nothing changed.

The only workarounds I found is to force EmailComposeMode to Inline and force not to hide the reading pane to every single OWA user. Another way to show Group and Distribution Lists members, also when is used the SeparateForm to compose new messages, is to copy the address presented in browser link presented in the new form in another browser tab (CTRL+T) or in another browser window (CTRL+N): in fact if I copy the address presented for the SeparateForm "https://owa.contoso.com/owa/#viewmodel=IMailComposeViewModelFactory&wid=76&ispopout=1" in a manually opened window the members of Group and Distribution Lists are presented correctly.

I hope to here from you soon.

Thanks in Advance,

Davide

What's the user impact, all the users?

Can this problem be reproduced on any machines?

Please firstly upgrade to CU9 and check if the issue can be reproduced again.

Hello Jin,

yes I can confirm that all users are affected, I tried with three different browsers: Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. I already upgraded to CU9 and the issue is still present.

I have another news: I upgraded another installation of Exchange 2013 that was running on CU7 to CU9. With CU7 I couldn't reproduce this issue after upgrade to CU9 the problem appeared. So I think I can state that is a bug introduced with CU8 and also affects CU9 installations of Exchange 2013. I hope that Simon will give us some good news... Maybe a hotfix. :)

Thanks in Advance,

Davide

Hello C0ReDuMPX,

Sorry for my late.

On our lab machines the issue still occurs on CU9 but not occur on CU7. Will report this issue and you can wait for the further CU update.
