Exchange 2010 log files
Hi all, 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010. I have a bare metal backup running using Windows Server backup but the log files are not truncating. Is there a way to remove these automatically? TIA M

What is the error message? Is it failing to trauncate on all the passive copies? Please explain your backup topology wrt exchange server. Refer the articles http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876851.aspx http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2010/high-availability-recovery/uncovering-new-exchange-2010-volume-snapshot-vss-plug-in-part1.html Regards, Pushkal MishrA

Hi, My suggestion is to take incremental backup daily and full backup weekly. Instead of manually deleting transaction log files, take full online backup of exchange, which will purge all unnecessary transaction logs.Regards from www.windowsadmin.info

Hi, If a full backup or differential backup do not truncate log file then there's a possible error after you have executed your backup job. try to view the event log and provide us error that you can find there! however, the backup job can succeed without any error, so that I can say that you are using a copy backup in windows server backup with the archive bit not initiated. so that your log file will not be truncated. In fact, these technic use the default vss whitch is a copy backup. The solution then is to use the custom backup like this: Start Windows Server Backup. In the Actions pane, click Backup Once. The Backup Once wizard appears. On the Backup options page, select Different options, and then click Next. On the Select backup configuration page, select the type of backup that you want, and then click Next: Select Full server (recommended) to back up all volumes on the server. Select Custom to specify which volumes should be included in the backup. If you select this option, the Select backup items page appears. Select the volumes to be backed up, and then click Next. Note: By default, volumes that contain operating system components or applications are included in the backup and can't be excluded. On the Specify destination type page, select the location where you want to store the backup, and then click Next. If Remote shared folder is selected, the Specify remote folder page appears. Specify a UNC path for the backup files, and then do one of the following to configure access control settings: Select Do not inherit if you want the backup to be accessible only by a set of specified user credentials, and then click Next. Type a user name and password for a user account that has write permissions on the computer that is hosting the remote folder, and then click OK. Select Inherit if you want the backup to be accessible by everyone who has access to the remote folder, and then click Next. On the Specify advanced options page, select VSS full backup, and then click Next. On the Confirmation page, review the backup settings, and then click Backup. On the Backup progress page, you can view the status and progress of the backup operation. Click Close when the backup operation has completed. If you want to continue using copy backup and truncate the log file you can enable circular logging on your Mailbox databases. Best regardsBest Regards Don't forget to mark it as answer if it helps

@BDIChopper 1. Only Full backups are suported. So you must choose this type of backup. 2. You have to backup the entire volume where the database and logs files reside, this will ensure log truncation will occur. 3. I assume youre not using DAG as you have mentioned only one server. Sukh

Thanks for all your help on this one. It's now working. VSS Full rather than Copy did the trick! Thanks Mike
