Exchange 2010 in Active Directory 2012
Hi. We have an Exchange 2010 SP1 organization installed in a Windows Server 2003 AD functional domain with 2 2003 DCs and 2 2008 R2 DCs. We'd like to replace the 2003 DCs with 2012 but before extending the schema and introducing 2012 DCs into the mix, is Exchange 2010 supported in this configuration? The question is strictly about AD. Exchange 2010 is installed on a 2008 R2 member server, that's not changing. Will introducing 2012 DCs into the domain have any compatibility impact on Exchange? Thanks.

I didn't find any offical doc. about this kind of scenario and Windows 2012 is quite new so we don't have much experience on it. I suggest you firstly have a test in a lab enviroment, and backup your AD before you are planning to change something. :)Jack Zhou - MSFT

We already tested Exchange 2010 in an AD 2012 environment. We ran into issues at all. In fact our test environment is an exact replica of our production environment and we've upgrade almost all of our servers to 2012. The only issue we ran into was upgrading the Exchange 2010 servers to server 2012. After the upgrade, the EMC no longer works. The tree on the left side wont expand. You get all the usage stats but that's it. So yeah, Exchange 2010 with AD at 2012 = no problem.

Lifting up AD from where you guys are and introducing Server 2012 should be fine. If I were you guys I would hang on and wait ( since this is production), as there are not sufficient enough support documents available as far as Windows 2012 & Exchange 2010 goes. I think lifting 2003 DC's up-to 2008 R2 Domain controllers and waiting is a better call , I am sure within couple more months Server 2012 will catch up and you will see more comprehensive support document and go for it Best ocd Oz Casey, Dedeal MCITP (EMA), MCITP (EA), MCITP (SA) Visit smtp25.blogspot.com Visit Telnet25.wordpress.com This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.
