I have a service application that reads POP3 from an Exchange 2010 cluster. It's a large install, 10,000 plus users, none of which are POP3. The problem is that the service app needs to retrieve all of these user's emails via journaling (no, we can't use IMAP because it is slower than molasses for this purpose and we'd never keep up) and we hang on certain emails, almost always Calendar Acknowledgements. Does the CheckPop3Tail apply to Exchange 2010? There are numerous articles pointing to 2000/2003, but no mention anywhere of 2007/2010. Need help ASAP as 10,000 users can create quite a mess quickly.

Sean, The problem isn't so much CheckPop3Tail setting itself but of unterminated or not properly closed email retrieved via pop3 still hangs on fetches. On 2007 exchange we still see pop3 clients hang on malformed emails exactly as the problem is described in the fix for 2000/2003. What about 2007 Exchange? Does the "fix" apply for it? Either way, 2007/2010, the issue has not been solved outlined in the tech notes referenced in this thread. Fetchmail of POP3 messages still hangs on those messages that have not been properly closed by exchange. We experience this everyday. If CheckPop3Tail is not the answer, what is?Rodd Johnson

Their configuration is done in the *.config files you'll find in the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\PopImap.
