Exchange 2010 Setup fails at HubTransport role on Server 08 R2
I have a non-DC server on my network that I use to host our non-system critical applications. A long time ago our network had Exchange 2003 installed, but when it was removed it was yanked without properly removing all the references from the ADSI, etc. I've spent a fair amount of time cleaning that up, but now I am unable to get past one error in particular. I got far enough into the install that I have the Management Tools installed, but none of the roles will install, instead I now get the following error: -- Organization Prerequisites Failed Error: A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the HubTransport role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel. Recommended Action: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=30939&l=en&v=ExBPA.4&id=d75e184d-b94b-4c07-b43a-ac5b9f0c4789 Warning: Setup is going to prepare the organization for Exchange 2010 by using 'Setup /PrepareAD'. No Exchange 2007 server roles have been detected in this topology. After this operation, you will not be able to install any Exchange 2007 server roles. -- From the logs: [03/30/2010 13:52:51.0158] [0] ********************************************** [03/30/2010 13:52:51.0220] [0] Starting Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 Setup [03/30/2010 13:52:51.0220] [0] ********************************************** [03/30/2010 13:52:51.0228] [0] Local Time Zone: (UTC-07:00) Mountain Time (US & Canada). You appear to be missing the Exchange Configuration Container and others. Did you clean up your 'AD' using ADSIEdit after you prepped the Schema for Exchange 2010? "Prepare Active Directory and Domains" http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb125224.aspx See 'PrepareSchema. Now /prepareAD should also run any prior steps if they haven't already been done (see above link) but the error log doesn't appear to show that it thinks that step is missing, which may be your issue. Without going exactly into what you've deleted I would prep your Domain again. Ensure you're an Enterprise Administrator. I believe '03/30/2010 14:01:49.0878] [1] [ERROR] A Setup failure previously occurred while installing the HubTransport role. Either run Setup again for just this role, or remove the role using Control Panel.' is just a red herring because of bigger issues here. You should have re-installed an Exchange 2003 Server using the /disasterrecovery switch, rather than cleaning it up, as you may have not done it properly. Can you re-run /prepareschema (or /ps for short), then /prepareAD and try again? Also ensure you specify an Organization Name when you run /prepareAD as it's missing and will create the Exchange Container. I cleaned up via the ASDIEedit prior to starting the 2010 install. Sadly, I had to do a manual removal of Exchange 2003. The previous Admin yanked the server ('03) out without properly removing Exchange, because he thought we'd never use Exchange again. Then he upgraded all the servers with Server 2008 R2, but he managed to keep the AD retained through the whole process. Thus it thought that 2003 was still around. When I finally got all the snippets of Exchange 2003 removed, I was able to install 2010...or so I thought. Anyway, I get the same error messages when I re-run /prepareschema. Which is something I did before this install as per the Exchange setup guidelines. How I wish I could nuke it all and start from scratch...too bad I don't have time for such an undertaking.
