Exchange 2010 SP1 OWA connecting to http://activex.microsoft.com/objec ts/ocget.dll ?
Hi all, We are running a vanillla install of Exchange 2010 SP1 (rollup 1 for SP1 is not installed and it wasnt an upgrade from RTM). The install is for testing purposes so the test users are all running internally with no internet access. Everything works OK apart from a weird issue with OWA. We have IE 7 installed on client machines and when a user clicks on "New" message or replies/forwards a message the proxy server authentication box pops up. It appears that when a user clicks this button, for some reason OWA tries to go to the outside world and connects to http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll Why is this? If you click cancel on the proxy authentication box you can happily still work away. I have a few theories if anyone can help: This is a bug with IE 7 trying to connect to OWA 2010 and it needs newer files from MS for some reason I didn't test RTM exchange so has some back end code in OWA been changed for SP1 and the required files not updated on the CAS box? This may even be normal behaviour for 2010, but from what I've read on hte problem it appears to be code in OWA making IE go out to the internet looking for a newer version of a file for some reason Any ideas? I'm going to get a test box built with IE8 to see if the problem is still present in IE8 in te meantime.

Whenever it does that it tries to get to that URL. >I have a few theories if anyone can help: 1. This is a bug with IE 7 trying to connect to OWA 2010 and it needs newer files from MS for some reason It's not a bug, but it does have to do with downloading new files from the server. When this happens, do you download any activex controls or do you just skip that part (or are none offered for installation)? Try clicking the "Options" button at the top right-hand corner. Then click "E-Mail Security" and click the "Reinstall the Outlook Web Access S/MIME control". Does that stop the pop-up? This one's pretty old, but have a look: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323207 --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

I don't use S/MIME so don't use any activex stuff. I saw that MS KB article during my initial investigation and that's what made me think that possibly the file somewhere is outdated. I have installed IE8 on a test machine and tried again. The proxy box doesn't pop up so OWA isn't trying to go to the activex site anymore. I then uninstalled IE8 leaving IE7 and the problem returns. Probably not a major thing as most OWA users are based externally so their internet explorer can access the internet, but worth noting for test environments using IE7 and 2010 SP1 where internet access is controlled via a proxy server. Not sure if SP1 caused this as I installed SP1 as a clean install so cannot comment on RTM version. I am running Exchange off Server 2K8 R2 which has IE8 installed so maybe that's part of the problem. No idea!

You don't have to use S/MIME for the feature to be useful. >I saw that MS KB article during my initial investigation and that's what made me think that possibly the file somewhere is outdated. That's because the problem lies with IE, not Exchange. There are many files that IE might download. >Probably not a major thing as most OWA users are based externally so their internet explorer can access the internet, but worth noting for test environments using IE7 and 2010 SP1 where internet access is controlled via a proxy server.
