Exchange 2010 Dumpster file 57gb. How to reduce size.
I have a user who's 1gb mailbox has a 57gb dumpster file. And its growing. We have set his deleted items recovery to 2 days (was 30), no change in dumpster size. I think it may be a calendar dumpster issue. I read that the deleted item retention does not affect the deleted items from the calendar. But how do you clear the calendar dumpster? I even took the db offline and did an eseutil /p and then an eseutil /d just for kicks to see if that would help... I didn't Thanks for any ideas. Peter

1. Check there isn't a retention policy applied with a legal hold for some reason 2. Check that the database has the 'Enable background database maintenance' option ticked. If it isn't then either tick it or set a specific maintenance schedule. Neill

Neill, 1. Nope, no retention set. 2. Yes the enable background database management option is ticked and I have set the maintenance windows to 24 x 7. Thanks- Peter

Hi, Where did you check the size of the dumpster? Please have a look at the article below and then check the related settings. Single Item Recovery in Exchange Server 2010 http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2009/09/25/452632.aspx Regards, Xiu

Xiu, Thanks for the response. I got the size with a get-mailboxstatatstics username | fl It shows the totaldeletedItemsSize, which is now 58gb. Their keep deleted items is set to 0 days and has been for a week. Thanks, Peter

Hi there, Been a while since i've posted as i've been extremely busy in my new role, however try this as you are using Exchange Server 2010. Search-Mailbox -Identity "affected user" -SearchDumpsterOnly -DeleteContent In regards to why it is filling up - is the user on litigation hold or are they any retention policies applied? Note that those switches are Exchange 2010 SP1 specific.

HI. Have you checked the OUTBOX folder of that user? Check it on his local PC - not from other client nor owa. He might be trying to send a message over and over. Please also try to modify his mailbox limits (the regular limits - not related to dumpster). I've seen problems when "prohibit send" was same or too close to "prohibit send and receive", this might cause such problems. Yizhar Yizhar Hurwitz http://yizhar.mvps.org

Andy-- thanks for the tool.. Yep, that worked. I was able to shrink the file. It took 20 hours to do it, but it shrank! Thanks to all for helping! Peter
