Exchange 2010 Archiving require more CAS servers?
Hi, In Exchange 2010 SP1 you can deploy the archive mailbox on separate mailbox server. If I do this should I double my CAS servers as that means my CAS servesr will be doing twice the work if each users have a archive mailbox on a separate server? Thanks ECL

Its not that simple and its not a linear process. If youve dumped a load of mail into a post SP1 separate archive store the primary mailbox wont be working nearly so hard and the whole idea of the archive is that is not going to get much use at all. If you dedicate a server to be the archive for everything then I wouldnt do anything extra with the CAS. If you deploy an extra server and deploy some archive mailboxes on it and some live mailboxes then you include all your servers in the CAS calculations. Thanks Mark. Are there other areas of impact like the main mailbox transaction logs when emails are archived from the main mailbox to the archive mailbox?

Whilst it is true that, on a set schedule, you will be generating more logs you should remember when you are planning on doing the archiving. Are you going to do it more than once a week? Probably not. Are you going to do it in the middle of a working day? Probably not. What you might want to take a look at is the number of VSS backups youre doing and take those into consideration. At best youre going to assign a little more space to the storage/backup server to take account of the logs you are going to retain. "ECL" wrote in message news:54986c43-3914-4b31-a96f-6febf4c2bc93...
