I'm currently running 2010 SP1 RU3v3 and tomorrow I have a maintenance window scheduled. Now, other than BES Express there is nothing that is "linked" to Exchange beyond our regular Outlook/ActiveSync/Webmail clients. I'm inclined to go to SP1 RU6 for now, and jump to SP2 in the next maintenance window (we don't work weekends so scheduling one is not a big deal). I guess my question is, assuming you don't have a dependency on a particular version, what is Microsoft's best practise on where to be in terms of Service Pack + Rollup level please? Thanks, Paul

Thanks, Paul "Best practce" in this case, is what you're comfortable with. SP1 UR6 is pretty safe and 2010 SP1 is still in "Mainstream" support. But an update rollup isn't a service pack, and a servce pack comes with it's own set of things to deal with (that's why there are release notes) that you usually encounter with an update rollup. If you look through the SP2 docs, and the update rollup docs for RU1, 2, and 3, and you're okay with the differences to what you're running now, then running SP2 and UR3 would probably be *Microsoft's* idea of where you should be.--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Thank you both - I'll likely stick with SP1 RU6 for now. Just to confirm as well, I have a bunch of Windows Updates for 2008 R2 that need to be installed. Many relate to .net - anything to be wary of with regard to Exchange 2010? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2540222 is all that I can find.

There's no need to install a newer release of .Net so don't do that. All the rest of it is just the same as any other set of hot fixes and security update -- install them on lab servers first. Thanks Rich, we didn't have .net 4.0 on the server so I didn't install it (and nor did Microsoft/Shavlik suggest it). I went to SP1 RU6 and I'll pull the trigger on SP2 RU3 in a couple of weeks once I've read up on any gotcha's as that one does seem like there's no way back - thanks very much :)
