Exchange 2010, Outlook 2003 clients cannot download OAB
Hi all,
I've just set up a new installation of Exchange 2010 in a new domain in a new forest with external trust to a Windows 2003 domain.
I haven't set up public folders and Outlook 2003 support initially, then the customer told me he had some Outlook 2003 clients he forgot about, so I have built a Public Folder Database and added Public Folders distribution mechanism to the Default Address
Book.
Everything is fine with Outlook 2007 clients but Outlook 2003 SP3 clients cannot download the OAB, I get the error:
Task 'Microsofto Exchange Server' reported error (0x8004010F): 'The operation failed. An object could not be found''.
Then I've set Diagnostic Logging to High for "OAL Generator" and I've searched the Application Event Log for errors. There's a long sequence of successful operations (see below) and a warning (but I'm not sure it is involved in the problem):
------------------------------------------------
OABGen is preparing to open the OAB folder '/o=BraccialiniHQ/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book' on the public folder database.
- \Default Offline Address Book
OABGen is attempting to create or open the sub folder 'OAB Version 4' under the offline address book folder '/o=BraccialiniHQ/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book'.
- \Default Offline Address Book
OABGen successfully created or opened the sub folder 'OAB Version 4' under the offline address book folder '/o=BraccialiniHQ/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address Book'.
- \Default Offline Address Book
OABGen successfully opened the folder 'OAB Version 4' containing the previous version of the offline address book for address list '\Global Address List'. Address list distinguished name is '/', sequence number is 6 and tracking GUID is 8a2f1558-faa3-4a08-b9ad-23e27c3d0c52.
- \Default Offline Address Book
OABGen successfully generated and posted the version 4 offline address book for address list '\Global Address List'.
- \Default Offline Address Book
OABGen could not generate full details for some entries in the offline address list for address list '\Global Address List'. To see which entries are affected, set event logging for the offline address list generator to at least medium.
Offline address book generation finished.

And this is the output of "Get-OfflineAddressBook | fl":

What else should I check to have it working?
Thank you,

The first thing to check is whether the public folder database is set on the Properties of the mailbox database.
It doesn't always happen automatically, particularly when you create the public folder database after the initial setup. It is on the properties of the Mailbox Database under Org Config.
