Exchange 2007 server hangs completely at loss of network
Hi.I have an Exchange 2007 server (single box installation) that hangs completely when network connection fails. At one time the nework switch locked up and another time the network cable was unplugged but the end result in both cases was that the Exchange server was completely unusable, even from the console. The only way to shut it down was by powering it off.Is this default behaviour for an Exchange 2007 server or is there something screwed up with this installation?TIA.

Hi Martin,This is not the default behavior of Exchange 2007, it looks something related to Operating System or other things. Are you able to connect through OWA or Outlook when network connectivity is back to normal on Exchange server? From the Exchange prospective I would suggest you to run ExBPA to scan your Exchange configuration and try to resolve all the errors detected in it. Id simulate the situation by disabling and stopping all the exchange services whenever I get next scheduled downtime to find out it is related to windows or Exchange. If it hangs when all Exchange services are disabled then it must be some OS/Hardware/driver problem and need to work on that part. Additionally check the system & event log for related errors from the time when network was back to normal until the point you rebooted the server. I would suggest you to check the network driver update on the vendor site and alsocheck the speed of network card configured in Windows (which should be similar to the speed configured on the switch).Amit Tank || MVP - Exchange || MCITP - Exchange 2007 || http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Thanks Amit. I haven't had a chance to revisit this problem but all the feedback I have gotten indicates HW/OS problems so I will focus on that.
